Friends of Selene
Selene is a vocal consort of young professional singers based in London. With our signature intensity of text and vocal colour, we bring "ravishingly lovely and deeply intellectually engaging" performances of renaissance vocal music to audiences live, on record, and on air. (Rick Anderson, USA CD.) Selene is directed by tenor and composer Daniel Gilchrist.Between them, Selene’s singers have served in some of Britain’s finest collegiate and choral foundations, and can now be found in leading professional ensembles including Tenebrae, Ex Cathedra, The Queen’s Six, and Stile Antico. Many are also accomplished soloists on the oratorio and opera platforms, bringing authority and vitality to music that has waited centuries to be heard.Founded in Oxford in 2022, Selene specialises in the restoration and performance of pre-Reformation English polyphony. We are two critically acclaimed CDs into a landmark collaboration with the editor Dr. Russell Blacker to record the complete works of the Eton Choirbook, including the partially preserved pieces which have not been heard (or seen) in modern times for over 500 years. Our first disc, Heavenly Light, was called 'incredibly special' on BBC Radio 3, 'full of ecstatic singing, reflecting the joy of rediscovery' (Tony Way, Limelight) and selected for the USA CD 'Hot List for Libraries'. Our second, Earthly Solace, was released in July 2026 to ★★★★☆ star reviews in The Times and BBC Music Magazine, and praised for its 'remarkable artistic maturity… extraordinary transparency of the contrapuntal fabric' and 'exemplary rigour' (Marçal Borotau, Sonograma). Recent concerts have taken Selene to Magdalen College Oxford, the Three Choirs Festival, and St Martin-in-the-Fields.It is our mission to share this music with live audiences as widely as possible, and we are planning a full programme of festival appearances and concerts for 2027 – your support will help make this happen.Thank you so much for your support and this crucial stage of our development!
