Make your own Canoe Paddle! Learn the art of traditional craftsmanship in this hands-on hand-carved canoe paddle class. Participants will transform a raw piece of wood into a functional and beautiful paddle using time-honored techniques and hand tools. Guided step-by-step by Ken Wise, you&rsquo;ll explore wood selection, shaping, carving, and finishing, leaving with a custom paddle that reflects your skill and personal style.&nbsp; No prior experience is necessary&mdash;just bring your curiosity and appreciation for working with your hands.

Canoe Paddle Carving

Everyone will dye or tie-dye a cotton bandana or silk scarf using plant materials from Jude&#39;s dye garden. Along the way well delve into the ancient, worldwide art of natural dyeing, peruse Jude&#39;s dye records books, naturally dyed finished and ongoing projects. Note-taking encouraged. About the Teacher!Mainer Jude Hsiang was born knitting and has been exploring natural dyeing for 50 years, teaching for 20. &nbsp;She is particularly interested in dyeing Maine fibers sourced from farmer friends with plants from her dye garden and locally foraged. She also uses natural fibers and dyes from other parts of the world. A former shepherd and lifelong gardener, Jude retired as a botany instructor with the UConn Extension Master Gardener Program.

&nbsp;Full 7 Session course taught by renowned kayak and canoe builder, Jim Hsiang&nbsp; Sessions Dates:March- 28th + 29thApril- 12th + 26thMay- 3rd, 16th, + 17thAll dates are full day classes Students will work to frame and cover their very own Greenland Kayak! These are lightweight and durable kayaks built with peg and lash techniques that require no hardware.&nbsp; This class is funded in part by a generous grant from The Davis Family Foundation

Come join us for this unique triangular corner basket. &nbsp;Just the right size for tea, cosmetics, keys or whatever small implements you want to keep contained in the corner.The base is a right triangle made right here at TearCap by our own Henry Banks! &nbsp; The basket is a combination of techniques &nbsp;with three sections of colorful patterns divided by equally colorful triple twine. &nbsp;Finish this off by adding a lovely ceramic piece specially made for this basket by Kathy Banks.Bring a snack to get yourself through lunchtime. &nbsp;Bring a travel mug, old towel, heavy duty shears ( leave those lovely fabric scissors at home), pencil, measuring tape, clothespins, ruler and any basket tools that you happen to have. Welcome to the wonderful world of encaustic! Encaustic painting is also known as hotwax painting, and it involves applying a mixture of heated beeswax and resin (andsometimes colored pigments) to a prepared rigid surface. The layered effects of this ancient art create rich optical patterns and a variety of options - there is so much you can do with encaustic. This introductory workshop will provide the basic information about encaustic painting -- what the paint is made of and a brief history of the process -- as well as foundational techniques to safely and confidently apply and manipulate layers of encaustic wax to create a painting. Participants are encouraged to experiment with the many ways the wax medium can be used and to let go of any expectations. Although you will leave with at least one painting, this is a class focused on process and play, so you can develop your own unique relationship with this expressive method. About your teacher:Heather Newton Brown (She/They) is a self-taught encaustic artist living in Wabanaki territory, Casco, Maine. In her mixed media creations, Heather endeavors to conveye motion, experience, and connection through abstraction. Her artwork serves as both a reflection and a transformation of reality, stemming from her unique personal journey while aspiring to resonate with viewers&#39; own experiences. Beyond her artistic endeavors, Heather also practices as a psychotherapist. During her leisure time, she cherishes moments spent with her human and four-legged companions, engages in volunteering, immerses herself in nature pursuits, and scours for scrap metal to incorporate into her next body of work.
