Teesri Duniya Theatre creates transformative performances that engage audiences in social issues through the Theatre of the Oppressed, fostering dialogue and community empowerment. Their mission is to challenge societal norms and inspire change through art.

A part of Backyard Theatre Festival, Echoes in the Streets explores the history of student protest in Montr&eacute;al over the past fifty years, tracing how young people have shaped the city through resistance, creativity, and collective action. Blending documentary performance, archival sound, and movement, the piece weaves together personal testimonies and political histories to tell a story of youth who refused to stay silent. The work reveals Montr&eacute;al as a living archive of dissent, where every chant, strike, and march echoes the ongoing struggle for change. Sep 9-12 at 7pm at 251 avenue des Pins O. The Food / Famine Tour est une performance engageant la communaut&eacute;, qui explore les aspects politiques et personnels de la nourriture, inspir&eacute;e par la famine &agrave; Gaza, les files d&#39;attente croissantes dans les banques alimentaires et le besoin croissant de programmes alimentaires dans les &eacute;coles. Ce projet vise &agrave; combattre le silence&mdash;tant &agrave; table qu&rsquo;au sein du discours public&mdash;en transformant ces enjeux par le biais de r&eacute;cits partag&eacute;s et de r&eacute;sistance artistique. Le projet comprend des ateliers, des recherches sensorielles et une collaboration entre artistes et la communaut&eacute; pour cr&eacute;er et pr&eacute;senter des histoires performatives centr&eacute;es sur la nourriture, la famine et les enjeux sociaux.

The Food / Famine Tour

A part of our Backyard Theatre Festival, the Food/Famine Tour is a community-engaged performance that delves into the political and personal aspects of food, inspired by the starvation in Gaza, growing lines at food banks, and the mounting need for food programs across schools. This project aims to combat silence&mdash;both at the dinner table and in public discourse&mdash;by transforming these issues through shared storytelling and artistic resistance. The project includes workshops, sensory research, and collaboration between artists and the Community to create and present performative stories centered on food, famine, and social issues. Imagine stepping into an intimate vibrant Istanbul coffee house. The air hangs heavy with the rich aroma of Turkish coffee, the soulful strains of music, and the rustle of poetry and passionate conversation. Beneath the warmth simmers political tension and quiet acts of resistance, all laced with bursts of humour and fragile rays of hope. In this atmospheric world, three narrators gently take you by the hand and guide you through an intimate yet epic tale &mdash; the story of an unlikely friendship between two people from vastly different worlds. Farias, whose name means &ldquo;Lighthouse,&rdquo; is a white gay man from a fictional North American city. Trapped in a low-paying, menial service job, he struggles forward with little hope for the future. Derya, whose name means &ldquo;Sea,&rdquo; is a Turkish woman who emigrates to North America to complete her PhD, only to discover, to her surprise, that she has become a visible minority in her new home. How can friends truly do justice to one another when they have almost nothing in common? This is the profound question at the heart of Wine &amp; Halva, written by award-winning playwright Deniz Başar &mdash; a first-generation immigrant from Turkey to Canada. Drawing on the rich tradition of narrative theatre from West Asia and the Middle East, Başar crafts a moving exploration of the labour, the joy, and the quiet power of friendship as an act of resistance. You laugh. You cringe. Then you laugh-cry &mdash; because it feels all too real. Join us for the second edition of MBC Productions and Teesri Duniya Theatre&#39;s Boal in Montreal showcase! Our all-new cohort has been hard at work creating a devised performance using the tools of Theatre of the Oppressed, and this is the outcome of that three-month process. The show will illuminate vital contemporary issues by inviting audiences to interact and shape the action onstage. You&#39;ve never seen theatre like this before! Performances will be held on March 11, 13 14, and 15 at Teesri Duniya&#39;s Rangshala, 251 Ave des Pins Ouest, Montreal. Boal

A part of the Backyard Theatre Festival, Migratory Birds tells the stories of three characters from Latin America who move to Canada. It explores their relationships with non- human species, their work, solitude, and nostalgia as they navigate life in the city and question their inclusion in this new world. The characters grapple with cultural differences and their emotions, creativity, and knowledge, forging connections that lead to encounters, recognition, and love. The play shares lived experiences and examines the dynamics of labour, exclusion, language politics, and borders. It depicts the characters&rsquo; commitment to the lands they now inhabit and their ongoing efforts towards decolonization. Sep 17-19 at 7pm at 251 avenue des Pins O. Join Teesri Duniya for the last of our Long Table Dialogue series on Islamophobia, antisemitism, and racialized hate. Building on the previous two dialogues - Across the Divide and The Shifting Divide - this final installment of the series will directly face the interplay between personal and political experiences and expressions of hatred. We will also discuss the role and utility of dialogue in moments of tense political pressure. Can dialogue really &quot;bridge the divide&quot; when political forces are stoking hatred and trying to push people apart? The Long Table is a participatory format that invites people to gather around a shared table, where speaking and listening are treated as equal acts. Participants may step forward to join the conversation or remain in quiet observation, allowing the discussion to unfold with care and intention. At a time of deep polarization, this gathering creates space for difficult conversations without debate or spectacle. Rooted in mutual respect, the Long Table invites participants to speak from lived experience, listen across differences, and resist dehumanization at a local scale. This Long Table series is generously funded by the Canadian Race Relations Foundation.
