Cross Ranch Biodiversity Tour

Join us on Tejon Ranch for a relaxed evening of nature journaling as the sun sets over the hills. This event is all about learning the basics&mdash;no art experience needed. We&#39;ll focus on slowing down and really observing the landscape using three simple prompts:&nbsp;I notice... I wonder... This reminds me of...&nbsp;These questions are at the heart of nature journaling and help you connect with what&#39;s around you, whatever your skill level. Bring whatever materials you like&mdash;pens, colored pencils, watercolors, pastels, or anything else. This is a self-guided experience, so settle in, take your time, and enjoy the golden light of a June evening on the grasslands. What to bring: your favorite materials, a light layer for the cooler evening air, and curiosity. You&#39;ll leave with a journal full of sketches and observations, not a finished masterpiece. This workshop is made possible by a grant from the California Arts Council and the Kern Arts Council.

We will be hiking along dirt roads at the top of Bear Mountain. We will hike a moderate 4-5 miles with an elevation gain of 1100 ft.

This is a moderate 2-3 miles up and back hike through Tejon Canyon, which was the historic route used by early explorers to cross the Tehachapi Mountains. We will hike along a dirt road, adjacent to Tejon Creek, through beautiful Sycamore and Willow riparian and oak and woodlands.

We&#39;ll set out before the golden hour, when the light of dusk spills across the rolling hills and valleys, painting the world in breathtaking shades of amber and rose. This is the magic hour photographers dream about, and Tejon Ranch is the perfect canvas. With over 270,000 acres of diverse terrain, Tejon Ranch offers a rare window into California&#39;s wild heart. Our Volunteer Appreciation Picnic brings together the people who give their time and energy to protect Tejon Ranch&rsquo;s open spaces, wildlife, and cultural history.&nbsp; Enjoy simple food, good company, and a chance to connect with staff and fellow volunteers in the landscape we&rsquo;re working to conserve for future generations. Explore Tejon Ranch through art in this hands-on cyanotype workshop with artist Rhonda Burton. 🎨 Learn this sun-print process using native plants and natural materials gathered from the ranch&rsquo;s diverse landscapes. We will explore the botanically rich are of the Mojave Desert and Sierra Nevada interface. Each participant will make artworks that they can take home. Materials are included in this workshop. Current Artist in Residence, Rhonda Burton &nbsp;is a Los Angeles&ndash;based artist whose work explores the calming, restorative beauty of the garden through photography and mixed media; her close-focus imagery of petals, succulents, and leaves emphasizes color, pattern, and texture, which she enhances by printing on fine art paper, hand-embellishing with colored pencil or pastel, layering rice paper, and mounting on wood or canvas beneath acrylic. After an early career in watercolor and teaching, she returned to art decades later to reimagine botanical details using collage, mono prints, and cyanotype techniques informed by a Wabi-Sabi appreciation for imperfection. A picturesque rolling plateau that provides stunning vantage points overlooking the vibrant southern San Joaquin and Antelope Valleys. Hike with biologist Dr. Mitchell Coleman, you&#39;ll encounter diverse flora and fauna, with the rich tapestry of the high country of conifer forest down to oak trees spanning unique ecosystems. The hike promises not only a rewarding workout but also panoramic views that reveal the lush greenery of the valley. Don&#39;t forget to bring plenty of water and your camera to capture the scenic landscapes!

Join National Audubon Society&#39;s Reed Tollefson for a day of birding on Tejon Ranch, where protected grasslands, oak woodlands, and rugged canyons offer habitat for raptors, songbirds, and seasonal migrants. We&rsquo;ll move at a steady, observant pace, focusing on field identification, behavior, and habitat. This outing supports the Tejon Ranch Conservancy&rsquo;s work to protect biodiversity and connect people with the land.
