BE A CAIRO PRESERVATION HERO!
WHY SHOULD YOU DONATE?HOW WE BEGAN While Cairo, IL has lost much over the decades, the city's rich historic foundation has remained. This is evident through the beautiful historic structures and museums, some over 150 years old, that can still be seen today due to decades of effort by dedicated citizens. When the 2020 pandemic hit, the economic impact on these beloved buildings was crippling. As a result, a group of current and former residents resolved to do something about it. Thus, in April, 2021, The Cairo Historical Preservation Project, Inc. was formed.HOW IT IS GOING Since that time, TCHPP, Inc. has been actively advocating for Cairo's historical treasures through awareness initiatives, social media, and fundraising events, such as our annual Cairo Magnolia Celebration, historic walking and bus tours, and organized church and private owner open house events. Through the generosity of like-minded donors and grants, we have raised thousands of dollars since the beginning for our four project buildings: Magnolia Manor, the Cairo (Safford) Public Library, the Custom House Museum, and Ward Chapel AME Church. These funds have been used for sorely needed maintenance, repair, restoration, and planning purposes. The Board has put in considerable time and and effort towards communicating our vision and networking with universities, government agencies, as well as other preservation and advocacy groups on a local, state-wide, and national level. These collaborative efforts have resulted in some untold stories of Cairo's history being unearthed and gaining a platform as never before. This is particularly true in the city's Black community. Cairo now has official National Park Service designation for two Civil War Network to Freedom (Underground Railroad) locations, a National Registry of Historic Places listing for Ward Chapel AME Church, as well as the recent digital and geographical launch of the Cairo African American Heritage Trail and Oral History Project. OUR FUTURE VISIONWhile the Cairo Historical Preservation Project, Inc. has had some significant accomplishments, we are just scratching the surface in the preservation of Cairo's historical legacy. The need and the vision is still great. Our all-volunteer board will do and accomplish as much as we have time, support, and funding to do -- all because we love our hometown. So be a hero. Help protect the unique history of Cairo for future generations by helping us preserve what beautiful structures we still have today, and continuing to uncover the unique and fascinating history yet to be discovered. Every dollar donated will go towards the protection, preservation, and awareness of our historic hometown story and architectural treasures.Thank you for being a Cairo Preservation Hero!====================================================The Cairo Historical Preservation Project Inc., is an Illinois Charitable Organization and is operating as a not-for-profit corporation under a 501(c)(3) status.
