The Nest

The Nest promotes community well-being through nature-based activities, education, and foraging experiences, fostering a deeper connection with the environment and encouraging sustainable practices for healthier lifestyles.

Join us for A Floral Feast, a creative workshop with artist and florist Bettie Hope of Thistle and Moonlace, where you&rsquo;ll learn how to design beautiful table decorations using edible flowers and natural materials. Participants will explore colour, texture, and seasonal blooms to create unique, food-safe floral arrangements. These handmade decorations will then be used to adorn the tables at our community lunch the following day, bringing together art, nature, and shared food in a celebration of creativity and community.This workshop will be held upstairs in the Methodist Church meeting room. To access the space head to the main doors of the building and you will be given directions. There is also a lift available for those with mobility issues.&nbsp;

A floral feast

Join us for The Secret Lives of Bees, a fascinating talk by Dr John Cannon from the Cleveland Bee Association, where you&rsquo;ll discover why bees are crucial to our planet&rsquo;s survival and what makes them so incredible. Learn how bees make honey, explore their remarkable world, and see them up close in an observational hive, all set within the beautiful historic Priory Gardens.This talk will be in an outdoor space. There will be some chairs available but please bring a camping chair if you have one you are also welcome to sit on the grass. Due to this being an outdoor event, there is a possibility of a late cancellation due to weather. In that circumstance, we will inform everybody by the mobile number given during booking.Children are welcome but must remain seated and quiet during the talks to avoid disturbing other attendees. If needed, please step outside with your child until they are settled. No dogs permitted (except assistance dogs).

Learn practical tips for making the most of the food you already have, reducing waste, saving money on your shopping, and lowering your environmental impact. Packed with simple recipes, creative ideas and money-saving advice, this hands-on workshop will help you waste less, cook more, and make a positive difference for both your household budget and the planet.

Waste not, cook a lot

Discover the abundance of edible plants growing right on our doorstep with renowned forager Lucy Cuzzocrea on this guided wild food walk through Guisborough Forest. Starting from the Forest Walkway and Train Carriage, Lucy will introduce you to a variety of seasonal wild foods, explain how to identify them safely and responsibly, and share their traditional and culinary uses. The walk will finish with a demonstration showing how some of the foraged ingredients can be transformed into delicious, nutritious food. Whether you&rsquo;re completely new to foraging or looking to expand your knowledge, this is a fascinating opportunity to connect with nature and see the landscape in a whole new way.

A short workshop with Catherine Howell of the Gaia foundation, introducing the concept of seed sovereignty and its relationship to issues of food security, the connection between seed and the food we eat, and exploring the use of bought food seeds as seeds for growing.The aim is to embed understanding that seeds form as a result of food growing, but also to enable people to begin using some of the food they have accessible at home (lentils, peas, beans, some spices, fruit) to grow their own food without risk or extra expense.The workshop will be a mix of theory, demonstration and simple practical activities that will include working with seeds and compost. &nbsp;No previous experience necessary.

Bling Your Bin is a fun, hands-on art workshop where you&rsquo;ll transform an ordinary food waste bin into a unique work of art. Using stencils, paint and creative techniques, you&rsquo;ll design a colourful bin that&rsquo;s sure to brighten your kitchen and be the envy of your street. No artistic experience is needed&mdash;just bring clothes you don&rsquo;t mind getting paint on. All ages and abilities are welcome.

All year round easy salad growing workshop

An evening of film, art, and conversation exploring the impact of marine pollution and the recent Teesside crab and lobster die-off, and what it means for our coastal communities.Featuring expert guest speakers, community voices, and creative responses, alongside exclusive sneak previews of Jeanie Finlay&rsquo;s brand new film. The evening also includes powerful work by artist Glynis Johnson, including her crab sculpture made from fishing waste, inspired by the die-off.Join us as we reflect, share knowledge, and explore a more hopeful future for our seas. This event is for aged 14+ and whilst tickets are free, we do very much appreciate any donations which help us to cover the costs of the event and support our work.

Our Sea, Our Future

&nbsp;Join us for a special screening of The Emergency climate briefing, a powerful and eye-opening film that lays out the scale of the climate and ecological crisis facing the UK and the world. Presented by Chris Packham, this incredible film combines expert insight, scientific evidence, and clear explanations, the film explores how climate change is already affecting our communities through extreme weather, rising costs, threats to nature, food systems, public health, and growing social inequality &mdash; while also highlighting the opportunities for positive change and collective action. The documentary aims to cut through confusion and misinformation, helping audiences better understand both the urgency of the situation and the practical solutions available at local and national level. It&rsquo;s designed to spark informed conversation, inspire hope, and encourage meaningful action within our communities. Following the screening, we&rsquo;ll be hosting a live Q&amp;A and discussion with an incredible panel of local experts and public representatives, giving attendees the opportunity to ask questions, share ideas, and explore what action can be taken locally. Panel guests include:&bull; Luke Myer Member of Parliament for Middlesbrough South and Cleveland, Alec Brown &ndash;Leader of &nbsp;RCBC, Carrie Richardson &ndash; deputy leader of RCBC and cabinet member for climate, Jemma Joy &ndash;Borough Councillor at RCBC for Hutton Ward in Guisborough.. Refreshments will be available during the interval. There is free parking available on site, and disabled access is available via the rear entrance of the building.The screening will also be captioned. Please let us know if you have any additional needs such as needing a seat close to the screen or will be attending in a wheelchair and we will reserve a space for you.&nbsp;

Join Fashion lecturer and designer Angie Coburn to create something magical from an old men&#39;s shirt! Learn how to upcycle an old item of clothing to create something entirely new!&nbsp; By choosing repair over waste, you help reduce textile pollution and care for the places we share 🌍. The Nest team will share simple skills, tools, and ideas so you can keep clothes in use for longer and support a more sustainable Guisborough.
