The Waterfront Project

The Waterfront Project is dedicated to advancing housing justice in Hudson County. We empower communities through advocacy, education, and support, ensuring equitable access to safe and affordable housing for all residents.

Evicted: A Community Conversation on Housing Justice Virtual Book Club & Author Spotlight with Matthew Desmond

Evicted: A Community ConversationVirtual Author Spotlight with Matthew Desmond Join The Waterfront Project for our virtual book club event, an open conversation with Matthew Desmond, Princeton sociologist and Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Evicted: Poverty and Profit in the American City. Desmond's groundbreaking work follows eight families in Milwaukee as they navigate the everyday reality of eviction, exposing how housing instability shapes nearly every part of American poverty. This event brings together The Waterfront Project's community of fellow readers, neighbors, advocates, and housing justice supporters across Hudson County and beyond for an evening of conversation, reflection, and action. Whether you've just finished the book or read it years ago, come ready to talk about what Evicted means for our communities. The Waterfront Project is the only organization in New Jersey combining free civil legal representation with HUD-certified housing counseling under one roof and serves as Jersey City's lead Right to Counsel provider. This conversation connects Desmond's national reporting to the work happening in our own backyard. What to expect:

A live conversation with Matthew Desmond

Community Q&A

Local context on eviction and housing justice in Hudson County

Ways to get involved with The Waterfront Project's ongoing advocacy

Zoom link will be sent to the provided email address after ticket purchase.
