The Willow Tree Project

Our mission is to provide accessible, educational opportunities for all students & professional interpreters. Also to support the Deaf community with education and professional experiences through sponsorships and more.

This workshop brings a personal perspective of the power and privilege of language that comes with interpreting as an act. You will go through the workshop and grow up with the presenter through the lens of interpreting and how that affects the everyday Deaf person. You will be given space to ponder your own privilege and the privilege of those who you may meet, work with, or serve. This workshop will be presented in ASL without interpretation.

The Humanity of Interpreting

For this session, Emma will cover Google Drive&rsquo;s valuable tips and tricks to maximize productivity as an interpreter. After we learn a little about Drive, Emma will demonstrate features of Google Calendar. During this workshop participants will have the opportunity to practice using Drive and Calendar.

Google Workspace for Interpreters: Drive & Calendar

This workshop will examine the concepts of power, privilege, and oppression and how they relate to our field. It will discuss why interpreters must study them and actively work to incorporate understanding of these principles in our work. Through group discussion, participants will examine scenarios describing the harm caused when these principles are not considered. It will challenge participants to unpack their privilege and work to avoid harm in their practice.

Improve your voicing skills and confidence! This workshop will focus on the skill of message analysis for interpreting from sign language into spoken English. Participants will use a framework to examine their own process of analyzing a message, and learn the various aspects of message analysis. This workshop is highly interactive, with lots of opportunities for practice, and activities to take home for continued skill development. You do not need to attend all workshops to receive CEUs.

Message Analysis - Dynamic Voicing Part 1

Matching your presenter has a million challenges that have to be met at that moment. Have you ever interpreted for someone who loves the limelight? Someone who is sarcastic, goofy, and loves to be seen and heard?Have you interpreted for someone who stands as still as a statue, but their voice carries so much emotion you become entranced with their message? As an interpreter, it can be hard to convey what&rsquo;s happening. Sometimes we can &ldquo;over-interpret&rdquo; or even &ldquo;under-interpret&rdquo;. In a hearing world, we are able to see, hear, and comprehend what is being presented by utilizing many senses. But take hearing out of the equation, what&rsquo;s missed? The rise and fall of a deep voice. Silly &ldquo;ahem&rdquo;s following a sarcastic joke. This workshop will be interactive on how to approach different scenarios.

Participants will explore how fingerspelling is used, and learn strategies for navigating receptive fingerspelling for more accurate and effective interpretations. This workshop is highly interactive, with lots of opportunities for practice, and activities to take home for continued skill development. You do not need to attend all workshops to receive CEUs.

Fingerspelling - Dynamic Voicing Part 2

Improve your voicing skills and confidence! This workshop will focus on the skill of register for interpreting from sign language into spoken English. Participants will explore what register means, and learn strategies for incorporating register into their work for more accurate and effective interpretations. This workshop is highly interactive, with lots of opportunities for practice, and activities to take home for continued skill development. You do not need to attend all workshops to receive CEUs.

Register - Dynamic Voicing Part 3

Improve your voicing skills and confidence! This workshop will focus on constructed dialogue for interpreting from sign language into spoken English. Participants will explore what constructed dialogue is, and learn strategies for navigating constructed dialogue for more accurate and effective interpretations. This workshop is highly interactive, with lots of opportunities for practice, and activities to take home for continued skill development. You do not need to attend all workshops to receive CEUs.

Constructed Dialogue - Dynamic Voicing Part 4

Improve your voicing skills and confidence! This workshop will focus on the skills of clozure and prediction for interpreting from sign language into spoken English. Participants will explore what clozure and prediction mean, and learn strategies for incorporating clozure and prediction into their work for more accurate and effective interpretations. This workshop is highly interactive, with lots of opportunities for practice, and activities to take home for continued skill development. You do not need to attend all workshops to receive CEUs.
