Later it became the main street of immigrants and the working class. As New York City&rsquo;s first entertainment district, the Bowery has links to Vaudeville, Yiddish theater, Irving Berlin, Harry Houdini, and much more. It helped foster Abstract Expressionism, Beat literature, Free Jazz, and punk rock. Join us for a seminal illustrated book presentation by author David Mulkins with music performed by ragtime pianist Ramona Baker. David Mulkins taught history and cinema studies for 25 years at the High School of Art and Design; he is president of the Bowery Alliance of Neighbors, author of the book The Bowery (2025), and editor/contributing writer on the historic signage project and book Windows on the Bowery: 400 Years on NYC&rsquo;s Oldest Street&nbsp;(2020). He has presented films at Film Forum and Anthology Film Archives and has given illustrated talks about the Bowery for dozens of venues and organizations, including the Yale Club, Salmagundi Club, Untapped New York, Players Club, Cooper Union, St. Marks Church, Tenement Museum, Museum at Eldridge Street, and the Guides Association of NYC. &nbsp;First Thursdays tickets are $5 for members and $10 for non-members; book presentation additional $5. Since the beginning of Russia&#39;s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the country has lost countless artists, writers, musicians, photographers, and cultural figures who chose to defend their homeland.&nbsp; One of them was Maksym Kryvtsov &mdash; a Ukrainian soldier, poet, and photographer whose words and images continue to resonate far beyond his lifetime. The program includes an open reading of Maksym&#39;s poetry and inviting guests to read his poems in Ukrainian or English. Set in a quiet space with live music and visuals, this gathering is not a performance but a collective act of remembrance. Maksym&#39;s sister, Anastasia, will be present during the event.&nbsp; This event is presented by Rebirth. Ukraine, the Ukrainian National Women&#39;s League of America, the Ukrainian Museum, Nash Format, and the Maksym Kryvtsov Foundation. Members&#39; Preview Exhibition Opening: The Ground Shifts Beneath Our Feet&nbsp;| Zhanna KadyrovaJune 294 - 6 pm In&nbsp;The Ground Shifts Beneath Our Feet, Kadyrova explores the experiences of displacement, resistance, and regeneration through transformations of Ukraine&rsquo;s physical landscape. Across five bodies of work made in the years following Russia&rsquo;s full-scale invasion, Kadyrova considers how Ukraine&rsquo;s land, the earth itself, responds to the threat of erasure with renewal. Through sculpture, embroidery, photography, and film, Kadyrova lays bare the ways in which &lsquo;Earth&rsquo; becomes a site of violence, memory, and resilience. From the destruction of the Kakhovka Dam and decimation of its reservoir ecosystem, to the mining of agricultural land, the five works that comprise the exhibition attest to how ordinary life survives despite extraordinary pressure. Palianytsia, Russian Rocket, and Embroideries (2022&ndash;) are three ongoing works created in the aftermath of the full-scale invasion, which Kadyrova will continue to enlarge as long as the war continues. Palianytsia is her iconic series named for the Ukrainian bread that became a marker of identity under occupation; Russian Rocket the series of short videos superimposing Russian rockets onto landscapes visited by the artist; and Embroideries consists of woven portraits that conflate domestic tranquility with the persistent presence of air alarms. Kadyrova&rsquo;s large-scale video installation&nbsp;The Forest&nbsp;(2025) examines the consequences of the destruction of the Kakhovka Dam by Russia in June 2023, and the surreal new growth rising from the dried bed of the destroyed reservoir. Realized with The Dovzhenko Centre film archive in Kyiv, the City of Zaporizhzhia and the Khortytsia Museum,&nbsp;The Forest&nbsp;is part of a collaborative effort with locals from the Zaporizhzhia region.The film&nbsp;IDP&nbsp;(2026) documents the evacuation of&nbsp;Origami Deer&nbsp;from Pokrovsk, a city in the Donetsk region, in 2024, when the war&rsquo;s front line approached. The film traces the monumental sculpture&rsquo;s odyssey from the park where it sat on a plinth that previously held a decommissioned Soviet bomber, through Warsaw, Prague, Vienna, Brussels, and Paris, to the Venice Biennale, where it is the centerpiece of the Ukrainian pavilion&rsquo;s&nbsp;Security Guarantees&nbsp;exhibition.&nbsp;Origami Deer&nbsp;has become a symbol of hope and survival. Kadyrova lives and works in Kyiv. She is the recipient of the 2012 Kazimir Malevich Prize, the 2013 PinchukArtCentre Grand Prize, and the 2025 Taras Shevchenko National Prize in Visual Arts. Her work has been exhibited at the Centre Pompidou, Palais de Tokyo, Castello di Rivoli, Ludwig Museum Budapest, Kunstverein Hannover, and institutions across Europe, the Middle East, and the Americas.

Members' Preview: The Ground Shifts Beneath Our Feet | Zhanna Kadyrova

Join us for a two-hour workshop in the art of Petrykivka, a phenomenon of Ukrainian ornamental folk art which is recognized as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO. The workshop will be led by Kateryna Kryvolap, a Ukrainian-Canadian artist whose work is inspired by the rich decorative traditions of Petrykivka art, a painting style known since the 17th century. In this hands-on workshop, participants will learn the fundamental techniques of this unique art form, including the traditional brush techniques and floral motifs, and create their own composition on canvas. No prior experience is required. All materials will be provided, and each participant will leave with a finished artwork. This workshop is for participants 16+ years of age. There are two workshop date choices, Saturday June 13 at 2 - 4 pm and Sunday June 14 at 2 - 4 pm.&nbsp; Kateryna Kryvolap is a Canadian artist, originally from Ukraine. A member of the Canadian Artists&#39; Association, she is known for contemporary and traditional decorative painting, particularly Petrykivka. Based in Canada, Kateryna&rsquo;s work has been exhibited in numerous countries including the USA, South Korea, Italy, and Canada. She is also the founder of Kryvolap Art Academy, where she has taught over 3,000 students from around the world.

With You, The Unknown Becomes An Adventure is a community impression performance created by participants of TISTO Studio&rsquo;s From Presence to Performance course in New York. &nbsp; This is not a traditional play, but an abstract collective odyssey in which the performers are real people - not professional actors - exploring body, voice, presence, and connection. Through body movement, personal text, live sound, and collective images, the performers search for a way home - to themselves, to their people, and to presence &ndash; by exploring the themes of war, displacement, selfhood, belonging, and the courage to be seen in a world that feels unstable and unfamiliar. This performance is directed by Igor Kliuchnyk, founder of TISTO Studio, and co-created by Maria Vaniieva.&nbsp; TISTO Studio is a New York-based experiential studio that uses acting, improvisation, and performance tools to help non-actors build presence, confidence, communication, and human connection. Far from the stereotype of a grey and monotonous Soviet life, post-war Soviet Ukraine developed a vibrant fashion industry shaped by designers, fashion houses, factories, state institutions, and international ambitions. Join us for a presentation and screening of rare archival documentary films from Ukraine, offering a unique insight into fashion production, visual culture, and identity in Soviet Ukraine between 1945 and 1991. Our guest speaker will be Dr. Olha Korniienko, a historian of modern Ukraine specializing in fashion and culture. Dr. Korniienko will examine the work of fashion houses, designers, and the broader mechanisms through which fashion functioned within the Soviet system. The presentation will also address how Ukrainian fashion was presented internationally, and how questions of national identity emerged in tension with central Soviet authority. The screening features rare archival films from Ukraine, including rarely seen footage of fashion houses in Kyiv, Lviv, and Kharkiv, fashion shows, and more.&nbsp; Dr. Olha Korniienko is the founder of the Ukrainian Fashion History Digital Archive and is currently a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions for Ukraine (MSCA4Ukraine) Postdoctoral Fellow at the Leibniz Centre for Contemporary History in Potsdam, Germany. She holds a Ph.D. in History from the Institute of History of Ukraine, National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, and is currently working on her book Fashioning Freedom: Ukrainian Soviet Fashion from World War II to Independence, 1945&ndash;1991.

Behind the Iron Curtain: Making Fashion in Soviet Ukraine, 1945–1991

Today, as a new wave of Ukrainian immigrants and refugees reinvigorates the area, the legacy of generations past continues to thrive in its churches, eateries, shops, and institutions. Together, we&rsquo;ll visit key landmarks &ndash; from iconic Veselka and the majestic St. George&rsquo;s Church to hidden gems like Streecha &ndash; hearing stories of resilience, identity, and tradition along the way. We will be joined by special guest speakers, including David Mulkins, author and president of the Bowery Alliance of Neighbors, and Jason Birchard, CEO and 3rd generation proprietor of Veselka. Whether you&rsquo;re new to the neighborhood or want to see it through a fresh lens, this walking tour promises an unforgettable afternoon of history, culture, and connection. Its underlying concept is the idea of polotno &mdash; canvas, or cloth &mdash; the weaving of ideas, forms, and creative imagination. It is organized around formal connections rather than chronology: the living threads of Color, Form, Geometry, Figuration, Texture, Line, and Ornamentation that bind together fine and decorative arts, textiles, costume, and folk art. The exhibition presents The Ukrainian Museum&rsquo;s collection as it has never been experienced before. In lieu of a conventional thematic or chronological account of Ukraine&rsquo;s cultural heritage, A Living Canvas is organized around the formal threads that weave the fine arts with the decorative art of textiles, costume, and folk art across centuries and geographies. This organization reflects something essential about Ukrainian art: that the boundary between the village workshop and the artist&rsquo;s studio was always fluid and mutually beneficial. The connections between the woven kilim and the painted canvas, the embroidered rushnyk (ritual cloth) and the modernist composition are materially tangible by sharing the same visual language. A Living Canvas makes visible their common qualities. A Living Canvas also pays tribute to the curatorial team that shaped it and to the institutional memory its members embody: Dr. Myroslava M. Mudrak, Professor Emerita of Art History at The Ohio State University, who has defined the critical frameworks through which Ukrainian modernism is understood; Lubow Wolynetz, the Museum&rsquo;s Folk Art Curator, whose deep knowledge of the collection&rsquo;s textile and decorative holdings is unparalleled; founding Director Maria Shust, under whose leadership the Museum&rsquo;s foundational identity was formed; Dr. Olha Yarema-Wynar, Olha Yarema-Wynar, Textile Conservator at the Metropolitan Museum of Art for over 20 years; and Dr. Maria Rewakowicz, current Head of Collections, whose stewardship has continued the Museum&rsquo;s mission to preserve and expand the permanent collection. The Ukrainian Museum is pleased to participate in the Downtown Culture Walk, a self-guided walking tour presented by the SoHo Arts Network (SAN), which highlights non-profit art spaces in the SoHo and downtown neighborhoods. Open hours and other programming will be offered at member locations for free or reduced admission. The Ukrainian Museum will offer free admission from 12 - 6 pm. TISTO - where theater meets real life.&nbsp; UCMF 2026 celebrates the theme of Mosaics, the rich variety of peoples, places and traditions that make up Ukraine&rsquo;s identity today. Epitomizing Ukraine&rsquo;s unique multicultural composition, this year&rsquo;s Afterdark concert will feature a performance by Ukrainian-Crimean jazz pianist Usein Bekirov. He will be joined by New York jazz musicians Akili Bradley on trumpet, Wayne Escoffery on tenor saxophone, Bar Filipowicz on bass guitar and David Hawkins on drums.&nbsp; Usein Bekirov is a recognized pianist, composer, arranger, bandleader, and one of the few Ukrainian artists endorsed by KORG synthesizers. His music experiments with jazz fusion, funk, and ethno-jazz styles and his original compositions are strongly influenced by Crimean Tatar, Ukrainian, Azerbaijani and Balkan folk music. The original recording of &ldquo;Eastern Kaleidoscope&rdquo; featured legendary American jazz guitarist and six-time Grammy nominated musician Mike Stern. In addition to Stern, Bekirov has also collaborated with such internationally-recognized artists as Bill Evans, Dennis Chambers, Ada Rovatti, and Randy Brecker. We do not wish to exclude anyone who wants to join us. Therefore, if the admission price is not possible for you, please let us know and we will accommodate. We are honored to partner with FABnyc, a team of artists and organizers rooted in the Lower East Side who spent years preserving cultural vibrancy, centering immigrant histories, and building toward contemporary futures &mdash; partnering with groups like the New York Immigration Coalition to ensure that community archives and cultural life belong to everyone, including the newest New Yorkers. Together, we will reflect on how individual stories connect to a broader history of Ukrainian life, migration, and resilience. Your contribution helps restore context to the past while opening space for new conversations about heritage, loss, and belonging.

She is an interdisciplinary scholar working at the intersection of environmental humanities and artistic research, and her practice includes writing and image-making. Tsymbalyuk is the author of Ecocide in Ukraine: The Environmental Cost of Russia&#39;s War, an intimate account of the damage inflicted on Ukraine&#39;s rivers, steppes, forests, and wildlife by Russia&#39;s invasion. The book received the 2026 Humanities Institute Book Award from Arizona State University and the 2025 UNWLA Kovaliv Prize in nonfiction/history. <a fr-original-style="" href="https://daryatsymbalyuk.com/" style="text-decoration-color: currentcolor; -webkit-user-select: auto; box-sizing: inherit;" target="_blank">https://daryatsymbalyuk.com/</a> Asha Bukojemsky Independent curator and public programmer whose projects foster critical dialogue around the construction of identity, decolonization, and the politics of memory. She is the founder of Kyiv to LA, a cross-cultural initiative established in 2023 that invites Ukrainian artists and researchers to participate in a Los Angeles-based residency and public program.&nbsp; Liza Goncharenko Art and ecology researcher at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp, currently in residence at Residency Unlimited in New York supported by Flanders State of the Art. She is an editor of Земля Палає / The Earth is Burning, a collective publication exploring the ecological, cultural, and social impacts of Russia&#39;s invasion of Ukraine. Her long-term project, Landscapes of Recovery, examines war-, fire-, and extraction-affected environments as ecological and cultural archives, with a focus on damaged forests and river systems in Ukraine.

The Ground Shifts Beneath Our Feet, A Public Program Featuring Talks, Food, and Film Screening

Gerdany is a six-class course in the art of making intricate Ukrainian bead-strung necklaces. Traditionally worn with folk costumes, today these necklaces are increasingly worn for adornment. The underground and daytime rave scene in Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities has become a powerful form of cultural resistance and a mental health coping mechanism during the war, qualities we need in New York right now, too. The Ukrainian Museum&#39;s Reading Rave invites you to join us around books and records, rare second copies from the Museum&#39;s own Library: volumes published in the 1950s and 60s by the renowned Mystetstvo publishing house in Kyiv, illustrated Diaspora editions and artist books by figures such as Jacques Hnizdovsky, and classics of art history in English spanning American Modernism and contemporary art. Many of these Mystetstvo bilingual volumes are now scarce and increasingly difficult to find outside institutional collections, this is a rare chance for New Yorkers to leaf-through a genuine piece of Ukrainian print history. Among its output, Ukrainian Museum Reading Rave guest readers &nbsp;will find high-quality bilingual art monographs and photo albums documenting Ukrainian art history, &nbsp;many produced in editions that are now rare and largely absent from circulation outside archives and museum libraries &mdash; alongside sheet music for theaters and musical institutions across the republic, postcards, theatrical literature, cinema guides, and a rare collection of Ukrainian Music records. The program activates both the Museum&#39;s interior and its street-facing entrance, transforming the lobby into a walk-in printed-matter library for the duration of the Reading Rave.

Ukrainian Embroidery This eight-class course teaches beginners the rudiments of embroidery while expanding the skills of those proficient in the craft. Participants will explore the history and evolution of styles, techniques, colors, threads, and fabrics traditionally used in embroidery in various regions of Ukraine.
