You will find that every fortunate minute you get to spend with ire&#39;ne lara silva is mind-expanding. This workshop experience will be limited to 20 participants.&nbsp; WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION In this writing workshop--suitable for all genres, ages, backgrounds, and artistic disciplines, we will be exploring possible barriers to doing the work our creative selves most want to do, aligning our intentions with our vision, and putting ourselves to work! Every registration to this event will bring us closer to achieving our mission of bringing healing to the community through art and literature. What is Canto, Grito?&nbsp;&nbsp;&quot;Canto, Grito&quot; is a list of affirmations for writers: &quot;I sing, I Holler,&quot; but it is more than that. It is a creative writing workshop series that is designed to give participants time with authors as well as time to write. It has a history. Voices de la Luna once held a workshop series called, &quot;Creativity y la Consciencia Nueva.&quot; As we organized to revive this series, we felt a name change was in order. Here&#39;s why:&nbsp; This workshop had been dubbed a &quot;master level workshop,&quot; which was available to writers of all levels. We began to rethink the word &quot;master,&quot; and the horrifying damage that has been done to our society because of this word and its implications about hierarchies of power and false ideas about who has and who does not have knowledge. We reject this word, and in the spirit of re-envisioning what this workshop had as its heart, an idea inspired by Texas author and theorist, Gloria Anzaldua, we renamed the whole series &quot;Canto, Grito.&quot;&nbsp; The ideas behind &quot;consciencia nueva&quot; were not lost though. They are based on Anzaldua&#39;s essay, &quot;Toward a New Consciousness/ La conciencia de la mestiza,&quot; where she says, &quot;[the future] depends on the straddling of two or more cultures.&quot;&nbsp; Anzaldua argues that healing the psyche and helping humanity evolve will happen through artistic intercultural communication-- and being honest when sharing our stories: &quot;Through our literature, our art, our corridos and folktales, we must share our history . . . so they won&#39;t turn people away because of their fears and racial ignorances.&quot;&nbsp; &nbsp;We are building this program around the premise that by having writers of all levels interact with one another through interviews, craft talks, conversation, and meaningful workshop, we are building community, raising awareness, sharing histories and the stories that connect us, and we can do this using whatever artistic medium we choose: music, song, dance, painting, photography, writing, textile arts, poetry, prose, you name it. This is one of the reasons why <a fr-original-style="" href="https://www.voicesdelaluna.net/issue-2/yanaguana-vol-1-issue-2-sol" rel="noopener noreferrer" style="text-decoration-color: currentcolor; user-select: auto; box-sizing: inherit;" target="_blank">Yanaguana&nbsp;</a>is digital: we want the opportunity to feature both non-visual and visual arts. In the past, we have had workshops with Pulitzer Prize finalist Candy Cooper, winner of the PEN/Bellwether Prize, American Book Award and National Book Award Finalist, Allison Adele Hedge Coke, and National Best Selling author, Guadalupe Garcia McCall. Our first Canto, Grito Writing Workshop will be on the 15th of September, which is Mexican Independence Day, a day when the colonizing nation of Spain was invited to leave the land.&nbsp; It is a day that began a new era of independence, and to recognize this, every 15th of September, there will be gritos throughout the world, hollering for autonomy, for independence. Mexico wanted to control its direction, its narrative, its role in history. This is what so many humans want for themselves-- and need. At Voices de la Luna, we believe everyone has a voice, and if it is from la luna, well, it must be coming in loud and clear as a grito, as a holler. We love the word &quot;canto&quot; too, for its multiple meanings in different contexts and cultures: &quot;poem,&quot; &quot;section of poem,&quot; &quot;I sing,&quot; &quot;a song&quot; &quot;sang.&quot; We love the spectrum of meanings and sounds between a canto and grito. So many possibilities of communication are held here in this phrase, a phrase that will hold the range of voices that we hear at our workshops If you like the sound of this and want to or can provide a scholarship to a writer or artist who can benefit from this workshop, please do! Canto, Grito: a Creative Writing Workshop Featuring IRE'NE LARA SILVA "Recovering the Creative Self: Love, Vision, and Action"

Join poet and American Book Award winner Adela Najarro for an immersive Canto, Grito Writing Workshop. 📖✍️ Together, you&rsquo;ll explore voice, memory, and place, and experiment with sound and image on the page. <a fr-original-style="" href="https://adelanajarro.com/" rel="noopener noreferrer" style="text-decoration-color: currentcolor; user-select: auto; box-sizing: inherit;" target="_blank">Adela Najarro</a> is the author of five poetry collections, including Variations in Blue, winner of the 47th American Book Award. Variations&nbsp;was selected for publication as the second volume of the Letras Latinas/Red Hen Collaborative series. Her other works include Split Geography, Twice Told Over, My Childrens, and&nbsp;Volcanic Interruptions, a chapbook featuring artwork by Janet Trenchard. WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION&nbsp; How to Love a Family Story Poetry encompasses all and cannot be contained, but where to start? In this workshop, we&rsquo;ll start with love, with those we love, with those who are tied to our hearts in the complexities of family joy and disappointment. To find truth, we need to dance through the familial mess and come out the other side with a piece of art called a poem. Thich Nhat Hanh, a renowned Zen Buddhist monk, published a tiny little book,&nbsp;How to Love, and using his words as a starting point, we will dive deep into the complexities of loving the people in our lives. In addition, join this workshop to expand your poetry toolbox. We will consider how image powers a poem&rsquo;s trajectory and the indeterminacy of language. There are multiple ways to love and multiple ways to capture those we love in our poems. For whom does your love speak? Hosted by Voices de la Luna and Yanaguana, this session supports our mission to inspire and promote literature and the arts, and to use creative work for education and healing. Writers and artists of all levels are welcome to listen, draft, share, and grow in community.

Join us for the Annual Poetry Festival: Singing Waters of Yanaguana 🎭📚 November 21, 2026, 2-5 PM, Galeria E.V.A. We are overjoyed to celebrate the Annual Poetry Festival, with special guests, Carmen Tafolla&nbsp;and Jen Ya&ntilde;ez-Alaniz, who will be showcasing their work and the work of others at our Festival! This year, we need your help to keep Voices de la Luna sustainable, thriving, and restored.&nbsp; Voices de la Luna is an all-volunteer organization and a 501(c)(3) non-profit. We rely on your tax deductible contributions to continue our work, and this fundraiser event will help us meet our goals this year so that we can keep publishing Yanaguana, and so that we can keep paying artists and organizers honoraria for their time, effort, creative work, and labor.&nbsp; Your one-time, monthly, or yearly contribution will help Voices de la Luna in our ongoing mission of bringing education and healing to community through literature and the arts.&nbsp; We do this through multiple projects such as Yanaguana, our new FREE literary magazine, affordable Canto, Grito Writing Craft Workshops, Poetic Medicine Workshops, free readings and events around town, and our Annual San Antonio Poetry Festival.&nbsp; Last year, at our&nbsp;Bilingual Poetry Festival: La Cultura Cura,&nbsp;we curated an excellent and eclectic poetry celebration and enjoyed a memorable afternoon featuring poets, music, and dance. Being the Indigenous name of the San Antonio River, the word Yanaguana celebrates the magical and complex history of the San Antonio area.
