Worlding

Worlding amplifies the voices of refugees through art and storytelling, fostering awareness and action. They collaborate with organizations to address the humanitarian crisis, emphasizing the interconnectedness of land and sea in the journey for safety.

Across Lands and Seas traces the continuum from water to soil, from the open sea to different lands, across borders. Both charities were created around the same principle: refusing to stand by while people died. While one operates on land and the other at sea, both believe that people in danger are a civic responsibility, not a political and administrative problem. They often encounter the same people, rescued in the Mediterranean, after having crossed the Balkans forests. But every year, people die. They&rsquo;re trying to reach safety in Europe, whose policies have progressively withdrawn safe and legal access to protection. Nine attempts to reach Europe before the UK. Supported by the Red Cross, he won a scholarship to the University of Warwick. He was named Big Issue Changemaker in 2024. He campaigns for the right of asylum seekers to work &amp; study, and teaches English to those who endured the same journey.&nbsp;Tigs Louis-Puttick founded Reclaim the Sea, helping those who crossed the seas in &nbsp;to reconnect with the water. After four years leading the project, she stepped back to be a Kennedy Scholar at Harvard researching sea borders and refugee rights.&nbsp;

Art Auction for Collective Aid + SOS MEDITERRANEE

WORLDING is delighted to offer 7 unique drawings by the artist Anouk Mercier, created specifically to sponsor her residency at WORLDING (21-26 September 2026).&nbsp; The drawings are part of an ongoing miniature, hand-drawn series, called Ruin Arrangements. Impossible arrangements of ancient architectural elements evoke ruins, fashionable in Piranesi&rsquo;s 18th century. Anouk Mercier &ldquo;borrowed&rdquo; &nbsp;from his remarkable etchings, playing with this tradition (indenting lines on a plate). She uses a modern copying technique, photocopying, to choose the details that stand out, cutting and re-arranging them. Then she draws them with ink on paper. Today, these piled-up fragments resonate differently, no doubt, as the tongue-in-cheek title Tetris I (miniature) suggests. But aren&rsquo;t the politics and aesthetics of order, chaos, history and its knowledge&ndash;or lack thereof&ndash;still at play in our imaginations of the present&ndash;and the future? It combines her encyclopaedic passion for historical etchings, with an awareness of image-making&rsquo;s contribution to the intertwining of our dreams and values. Her re-fashioned and deconstructed 18th century etching repertoire reveals the intertwining of history, beauty and, often, ideal. What histories do images carry? Does the contemporary scalpel reveal what we were or what we still are? Mercier is one of those artists whose research-driven approach does not hinder aesthetic plenitude. Her work is mostly on paper, but she has also worked with textiles, laser-cuttting and sculpture through site specific contexts. She has been commissioned public and private work for The Office of Public Works Ireland (2022), Torbay Council (2021) and Trust New Arts (2018), amongst others. Recent exhibitions include Bristol City Museum and Art Gallery, Bristol (2024), Birmingham School of Art, Birmingham (2023), Casino Marino OPW, Dublin (2022), Saatchi Gallery, London (2021).&nbsp; During her residency at Worlding, Anouk will develop Soft Edit, a self-directed project that studies and responds to the work of eighteenth-century women printmakers and the historical, social, and material contexts in which it was created <a fr-original-style="" href="https://mail.google.com/mail/u/1/popout?ver=1ztex6hthjy2#attid%253Datt_19fd6d0c5c3ce168_0.1_f_msheyyef0" rel="noopener noreferrer" style="text-decoration-color: currentcolor; -webkit-user-select: auto; box-sizing: inherit;" target="_blank">(link to full project outline here)</a>.
