Salt Marsh Garbage Clean Up

Help us clean up the salt marsh at Maplewood Flats! The waterfront at Maplewood Flats was once a rich place for the Tsleil-Waututh Nation to harvest shellfish and salmon, but after years of dredging and industrial logging, it has had a severe impact on the ecosystem. The mudflats were also one of three big estuaries of the Burrard Inlet, which was essential to the health of the Burrard Inlet. After years of heavy industry the flats are now in the process of being restored as much as possible to their former condition. In order to support the ongoing protection and restoration of this area, we ask that visitors refrain from walking or entering the mudflats, salt marsh and beaches. As these ecosystems are incredibly fragile and support biological interactions for microalgae and seagrasses, and critical organisms such as bivalves, crabs and worms. Which feed shore birds, otters and other animals. During this workshop, we will be teaching folks about the importance of this ecologically sensitive area while removing materials from the salt marsh. In this workshop we will be removing garbage, glass, metal, plastic and other objects from the salt marsh as a way to support the ongoing restoration work.  This work is extremely important and is normally restricted to the public. If you would like to join in this important work, please grab a ticket as numbers are limited (we can only allow small numbers in the area at a time).
