The Charleston Library Society is the South’s oldest cultural institution! Located at 164 King Street, the CLS is committed to life-long learning, serving its members, the Lowcountry community and scholars through access to its rich collection of books, historic manuscripts and archival material and programs promoting discussion and understanding of the ideas they contain.  The collections of the Library Society stretch from the 15th century to the modern-day and include materials from around the world. The Society paved the way for the founding of the College of Charleston in 1770 and provided the core collection of natural history artifacts for the founding of the Charleston Museum (the first in America) in 1773. And in November, DIHS members will have a unique opportunity to get a behind-the-scenes tour of this very special institution! We have two tours dates set aside, each can accommodate 12 members – Wednesday, Nov. 1 and Wednesday, Nov. 8, both beginning at 3 pm. Our groups will be led on an hour-long tour of the CLS’s three buildings, with a good amount of information on the library's history, plus a visit to the Bindery. Items from the vault will be on display for us to view and we’ll also get to spend some time in the Igoe Shakespeare Library!

ENTRY: Members and guests use the main entrance on King Street, at the top of the marble staircase. Library offerings and restroom facilities are wheelchair accessible by way of the rear entrance to the building or under the front stairs, entrances typically reserved for staff. PARKING: There is one handicapped parking space available in the parking lot. There are often one or two additional spaces for members, but parking is also reserved for staff. There are ample parking opportunities along King Street in addition to parking garages located to the east and west of the intersection at King and Queen Streets. See you on the tour!
