South Vancouver Island Anglers Coalition (SVIAC) is a small independent, non-profit angling advocacy society. Our efforts and initiatives are dedicated exclusively to ensure there will be abundant fish, healthy productive fish habitat and thriving public fisheries in our region for generations to come. &nbsp;We will ensure the public fisheries are recognized for what they are: a healthy, sustainable activity and undeniably the wisest use of Canada&rsquo;s valuable resource. Through membership fees, donations and our generous sponsors, we continue our involvement in our flagship salmon conservation initiative -&nbsp;&nbsp;The Sooke Chinook Enhancement Initiative has supplemented the diet of the endangered Southern Resident Killer Whales over the past 4 years, having &nbsp;released to over 4.8 million over the 8 years of our program, started in 2016 For over 12 years, SVIAC has proudly advocated for anglers&rsquo; rights on South Vancouver Island. At our peak in 2017, we have represented almost 700 members from Sooke, Westshore, Victoria, and Sidney. And, despite challenges like Chinook restrictions since 2018 and the pandemic in 2019, we remain committed to fighting for your fishing opportunities.&nbsp; Recent Advocacy Efforts and Challenges<ul fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: inherit;"><li fr-original-style="box-sizing:inherit;" style="box-sizing:inherit;">Port Renfrew Effort: In February 2023, we joined the Public Fishery Alliance and BC Recreational Fishing Association at a Fisheries Town Hall in Langford. Together, we successfully pushed back on DFO&rsquo;s proposed Southern Resident Killer Whale closures from Port Renfrew to Bamfield.</li><li fr-original-style="box-sizing:inherit;" style="box-sizing:inherit;">Sooke Chinook Enhancement Initiative (SCEI):&nbsp;On February 3, DFO provided notice of their decision to terminate this highly successful Chinook conservation program without any consultation. &nbsp;This initiative has released nearly 5 million Chinook into the Sooke Basin over the past 8 years. We continue to challenge this decision and the reinstatement of this important initiative.</li><li fr-original-style="box-sizing:inherit;" style="box-sizing:inherit;">Chinook Fishery Closures: At a February 26 meeting, DFO advised their current July&ndash;August Chinook closures are not meeting their escapement objectives. Internal DFO discussions now threaten August Chinook openings - our only remaining viable summer Chinook opportunity.</li></ul>Your Support Matters To effectively influence provincial and federal regulators, we must demonstrate that we represent the fishing public in our region.
