Widen the Circle will be participating in the observance of Yom HaShoah at Temple Shaaray Tefila with a conversation about how the power of remembrance is helping people heal from historic injustice, while also helping combat modern bigotry.  Widen the Circle founder Joel Obermayer will share inspiring stories of people doing this work in Germany and creating understanding and reconciliation where none seemed possible. We’ll also discuss why this type of community-based effort holds so much hope for the future.  We will be joined by Dr. Karlos K. Hill, a professor of African American studies at the University of Oklahoma. Dr. Hill has authored books on the history of lynching, on racial violence, and on their legacies in the black experience. He has participated in Widen the Circle’s International Bridge Building initiative, which brings American remembrance activists to Germany for an immersive learning experience with their German counterparts. He will talk about the inspiring work he has seen in Germany and how it is energizing and influencing remembrance activists in the United States.
