Please join us Saturday afternoon on August 31st, 2024, as we come together to watch a screening of the Stop the Sweeps Documentary at the Cinematheque. We will be joined by the Director, Ryan Sudds, as a special guest. Ryan will be sharing a foreword before the screening, and will be present for a post-viewing discussion, with a Q+A portion should time permit. Event details:Address:  The Cinematheque, 1131 Howe St, Vancouver, BC V6Z 2K8.Time: Doors open - 12:30 pm.           Showtime - 1:00 pm. The Stop the Sweeps campaign takes place in the Downtown Eastside (DTES) neighbourhood of what is known as Vancouver, the unceded, unsurrendered and sovereign territories of the ʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish), and səl̓ílwətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) peoples. The documentary is a community driven piece showcasing the unending work to abolish the street sweeps practiced by the Vancouver Police Department <span fr-original-style="font-family: UICTFontTextStyleBody; font-weight: normal; font-style: normal; font-size: 15px;" style="font-family:UICTFontTextStyleBody;font-weight:normal;font-style:normal;font-size:15px;box-sizing:inherit">and the City of Vancouver Engineering Department (workers represented by CUPE 1004). Street sweeps displace humans that have been the target of cyclical discrimination as the City of Vancouver continues to earmark poverty as a crime rather than a historic symptom of poor urban and humanitarian planning. In attending this screening, the unforgettable stories of those affected by these violent street sweeps will be shared to you in a setting that encourages re-education, advocacy, and how to get involved in local, community-centric efforts to protect our peers.
