Join us for a hands-on farm event where we will make a big batch of Biochar. While the fire is burning, we will explore, what biochar is, how it can be a permanent benefit to any plant, different applications, and all the ways to make biochar. You will also take home a bag of activated biochar to use in your own garden. Huerta La Buena Vida Biochar Class Saturday May 10th: 8am to 12pm Unlock the Power of Biochar for Sustainable Living Discover the many benefits of biochar—a powerful, eco-friendly product created through the process of pyrolysis. Join our class to learn how biochar can improve soil health, reduce carbon emissions, and contribute to a sustainable future. What is Biochar? Biochar is a form of charcoal that is produced by heating organic material (like wood, agricultural waste, or even food scraps) in the absence of oxygen, through a process called pyrolysis. The result is a stable, carbon-rich material that has multiple beneficial applications for both the environment and agriculture. Why Biochar Matters:

Waste Reduction: Converts organic waste materials into a useful, high-value product, helping reduce landfill waste and promoting circular economies.

Carbon Sequestration: Biochar locks carbon away in the soil for hundreds or even thousands of years, helping combat climate change by reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Cleaner Air: Biochar production reduces emissions compared to traditional burning of biomass, making it a cleaner option for waste disposal.

Soil Improvement: Enhances soil fertility by increasing moisture retention, improving nutrient absorption, and stimulating microbial activity in the soil. Biochar Uses:

Agriculture: Amended to soil, biochar can improve crop yields, reduce the need for fertilizers, and promote sustainable farming practices.

Water Filtration: Due to its porous structure, biochar is effective in filtering water by absorbing pollutants and heavy metals.

Energy Production: Biochar can be used as a renewable energy source when produced through pyrolysis, contributing to green energy solutions.

Gardening & Landscaping: Home gardeners and landscapers use biochar to improve plant growth, water retention, and soil structure.

Why Take the Biochar Class? In our class, you’ll:

Learn the Science: Understand the process of pyrolysis and how biochar is made.

Hands-On Experience: Get practical training in making biochar from common waste materials.

Explore Applications: Discover how biochar can be used in different fields, including farming, gardening, water purification, and waste management.

Become a Sustainability Advocate: Equip yourself with knowledge to promote and implement sustainable practices within your community.

The Instructor Jan Loeffler Bird is an environmental scientist, regenerative agroecological farmer, land and infrastructure designer, educator, and project developer whose work spans the scale from urban gardens to multi thousand acre farms and ranches to planned developments in the USA and Mexico.
