Exiles & nomads by Michele Amato

My works are often titled exiles&nomads. I make paintings that are also sculpture, often combined with photographic imagery. I use many materials: recycled wood, metal, cloth that evoke communities/dwellings that are destroyed by ecological disasters or war.
I use industrial materials like neon lighted script, plate glass, or steel.
I use paint to define illusion, and as visceral substance. These collages are accretions that are both abstract and representational, engaging paradox, contradiction and ambiguity. My intention is to witness and record private stories and public histories of life and death. Exiles&nomads has also taken the form of cast- glass or glazed ceramic figures and life-size portrait heads that have hybrid racial and ethnic physiognomies. These peoples are in a perpetual state of exile and transition that evoke melancholia and longing. My work is grounded in an acute awareness of the interconnected web of the ancient past with the present, rooted in the natural world. Family and community are symbols of potential renewal and social change in our global state of emergency and eco-cide.
