This immersive community event marks the premiere of a powerful new body of work from Bay Area visual artist Jon Harrison and offers an intimate first look at a documentary currently in production. The exhibit features documentary-style portraits and landscapes from Saint Stephen, South Carolina, capturing moments of connection, vulnerability, and joy across four generations of one Southern Black family. These images serve as a visual prologue to a forthcoming film about Issac Bailey, a journalist, professor, and Black man who stutters, as he returns home to confront the silences that shaped his voice and reckon with a family legacy marked by resilience, poverty, incarceration, and unspoken trauma. Issac Bailey. Issac is the main participant in the documentary that this event is supporting. He is a 2014 Nieman Fellow, a journalist, race relations seminar creator and facilitator, and the author of “Why Didn’t We Riot? A Black Man in Trumpland” (Other Press, October 2020). He is also the author of “My Brother Moochie: Regaining Dignity in the Face of Crime, Poverty, and Racism in the American South” (Other Press, 2018). He was a 2011 recipient of a Casey Medal for Meritorious Journalism for stories about a child protection case. South Carolina subsequently revamped the way it handles such cases. Jim Lebrecht. Jim co-directed and co-produced the Oscar-nominated documentary Crip Camp, winner of the Sundance Audience Award, an Independent Spirit Award, and a Peabody. With over 40 years of experience as a sound designer, filmmaker, and disability rights activist, Jim has reshaped how the world sees disability on screen. Dom Kelly. Dom is the co-founder, President &amp; CEO of New Disabled South and New Disabled South Rising. Dom has been organizing in the South since 2009, building a progressive future for disabled people in his region. From his early years touring internationally with his band A Fragile Tomorrow, to serving as a senior advisor to Stacey Abrams’ campaign, to leading groundbreaking disability advocacy across the South, Dom’s leadership exemplifies resilience and vision. Nina G. Nina will be the emcee for the evening. Nina is a person who stutters, a comedian, professional speaker and Disability advocate. She travels the country performing at comedy clubs and colleges and keynoting at conferences. She is part of the comedy troupe The Comedians with Disabilities Act, which brings laughter and awareness to audiences of all ages across the country. This is more than an art event, it’s a chance to help bring untold stories to life. All proceeds from the evening will support our next phase of filming in the Carolinas, including capturing pivotal scenes at Davidson College and a second Bailey family gathering. Our goal is to raise $15,000 to complete this next chapter of the film.
