Jacob wrestles with a mysterious being and leaves with a limp. Moses tells God to send someone else to confront Pharaoh because he is not smooth of speech. There are also teachings about disability, some calling for justice and others for the exclusion of people with disabilities. Theologian and disability rights activist Rabbi Julia Watts Delser says, “People often ask me what religious texts say about disability.” She likes to flip this question on its head and ask, “What does disability offer to Jewish tradition, to spiritual life, and to the practice of building meaningful community?” Responding to a disturbing section of the Torah about disability, we will explore Rabbi Watts Delser’s question and the need it points to for Jewish communities to which people of many identities and backgrounds can bring their whole selves.   Join us in exploring these issues in an open discussion led by Rabbi Bridget Wynne. All questions and points of view are welcome! All are welcome. No prior knowledge of Torah or Hebrew is required. Yet, explored from a sophisticated, adult perspective, rather than the literal understanding or children’s Torah stories we may have experienced, the Torah can be a rich source of wisdom for grappling with today’s real-life issues: ethics, family, work, politics, money, justice... Join us for this twice-monthly class led by Rabbi Bridget Wynne to explore the Torah and relevant commentaries in an open environment. Each session focuses on a specific portion of the text and the relevant issues it addresses. Newcomers of all ages and backgrounds are always welcome. You don't need to be Jewish to draw on Jewish wisdom. We meet online twice a month on the second and fourth Wednesdays, 7:00-9:00 pm PT. The fee per session is $30.
