Registration Commitment:One-Part Series - Monday, June 30 from 12:30pm-2:00pm Open to Participants:-Individuals with lived cancer experiences-Caregivers to individuals with lived cancer experiences Location:Empowerment Studio at the Chalmers Foundation Cancer Support Community Centre located at 25 Alison Blvd, Suite 2 (entrance is at the back of the building). What to Bring:Participants should wear comfortable clothing and bring a water bottle. About this Program: Relaxation and visualization (also known as guided imagery) techniques can be powerful and effective ways to help you exercise control over your physical and emotional well-being. Learn to manage cancer-related symptoms such as pain, fear, anxiety, sleeplessness, feelings of overwhelm, and feelings of isolation. This program is open to individuals with lived-cancer experience and their caregivers. It blends coping techniques with general discussion about challenges you may be experiencing with respect to cancer. “The Relaxation and Visualization program has played a pivotal role in my personal healing.  I have learned much from the facilitators and fellow members, sharing and listening in a space of understanding, compassion and safety.  Having been introduced to this program at Wellspring I am now able to practice Mindfulness daily, which has not only helped me through my cancer journey, but most importantly has helped me through my personal journey of Life.  For this I am most grateful.  I had a dramatic and positive health experience after coming out of a visualization class and following through that afternoon with the visualization exercise, using my mind to conquer cancer.” - Sandra Benns This is a single session-based program which is 90 minutes long. What to Expect: The format of this program tends to include the following; however, each leader may adjust slightly to adapt to their style: -15 minutes of relaxation -45 minutes of discussion -30 minutes of guided imagery In the session, professional group leader will guide you through a relaxation and visualization exercise used in the healing process. Common Benefits: -Reduce stress -Improve ability to cope -Reduce isolation -Achieve a sense of calm -Improve overall well-being Related Research: Relaxation and visualization have been noted in research to be important practices for some people living with cancer. Studies show evidence that an imagery- and relaxation-based program can improve symptoms like nausea, fatigue, and pain in cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy (<a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/27341675/" target="_blank">Charalambous et al., 2016</a>). Other studies have reported long-lasting reductions in stress in cancer survivors following a mindfulness-based intervention (<a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/27193737/" target="_blank">Carlson et al., 2016</a>; <a href="https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jamanetworkopen/fullarticle/2769135" target="_blank">Oberoi et al., 2020</a>). Cost: All offerings through the Cancer Support Program are free of charges to individuals with lived cancer experiences and their caregivers thanks to the generous donors, supporters, and community partners of the Chalmers Foundation.
