On November 28, 2023, help support the writers who live and work at Historic Joy Kogawa House, one of Canada's most established author residencies and a meeting place for Vancouver writers.Who are we?Historic Joy Kogawa House is a gathering place for Vancouver's literary community. Our writing workshops and literary events connect local writers and readers with visiting writers who live at the heritage house at critical points in their writing career while developing new work. And our weekly Tuesday writing evenings are a place to drop-in to write with other writers. We now also offer anti-racism programs and a writing circle for Asian writers who identify as LGBTQ2S+.What are our challenges?For many years we benefited from a major annual donation from a family foundation to fund operations. During the pandemic, the foundation's priorities shift to supporting frontline workers. At first we found COVID-19 recovery funds to cover operating costs, and then hoped to find another major donor. That group or individual is still to be identified. In the meantime, we are doing the work necessary to create an organization that is valued and supported.We continue to speak to the truth that now we have come to understand more deeply and clearly about twentieth-century clergy abuse related to the heritage house. Unearthing and facing the truth in all its complexity is critical for the families and the community, guided always by the voices of the survivors and their families as to what needs to be done. We are working to build relationships and find common ground to move forward. What do we do?We continue to adapt and find creative ways to support writers and writing. And we have had some successes! Highlights from 2023 include:<ul><li style="box-sizing:inherit">Hosting and paying honoraria to 9 writers-in-residence, from local writers to those from out-of-town</li><li style="box-sizing:inherit">Offering 14 engaging and informative writing workshops, many by donation (no one turned away) </li><li style="box-sizing:inherit">Presenting 7 book launches and 3 poetry readings to support local writers</li><li style="box-sizing:inherit">Paying artist's reading fees to 24 writers to support their creative work</li><li style="box-sizing:inherit">Creating a safe space where 11 writers who identify as queer and Asian could discuss experiences of anti-Asian racism during the pandemic</li><li style="box-sizing:inherit">Confronting anti-Asian racism with monthly discussion and writing circles for 12 writers of Asian heritage</li><li style="box-sizing:inherit">Maintaining weekly writing meetups for up to 12 writers at a time, in-person and online</li><li style="box-sizing:inherit">Partnering with Asian Canadian Writers Workshop, The Writers' Union of Canada's BIPOC Connects, Bakau Consulting, Carol Shields Fiction Prize Foundation, and other organizations to raise awareness for writers from diverse communities and to create space to share stories</li></ul>Why do we need your help?We need to raise close to $36,000 annually to keep the house warm, lights on, wi-fi humming, and enhance our resident writers' experience. Your donation will go directly towards month-to-month expenses as we sustain existing programs and online resources.What is the goal?The goal for this year's Giving Tuesday fundraising campaign is $10,000 towards our annual operating budget.Here at the end of the year we are falling short and may not meet budget without your help.<ul><li style="box-sizing:inherit">$50 will pay for electricity for one month</li><li style="box-sizing:inherit">$100 will pay for our monthly wi-fi connection</li><li style="box-sizing:inherit">$300 will pay for three months of cleaning</li></ul>If you would prefer to support writers directly, then please consider the following:<ul><li style="box-sizing:inherit">$50 will contribute to the honorarium for one writer-in-residence</li><li style="box-sizing:inherit">$150 will pay one writer to participate in a shared literary reading</li><li style="box-sizing:inherit">$300 will pay one writer to host a solo literary reading or writing workshop </li></ul>How can you help?Your donation is essential to continue our direct support to writers, readers, teachers, and students in the coming year. Support us this Giving Tuesday!The pandemic years have been difficult for everyone, and we hope that you are safe and healthy.
