Belonging Through Folk Song: A Singing Workshop with Fredy Clue

Join us in the ritual of making &nbsp;Traditional Ukrainian pysanky.No prior skills are needed. All materials will be provided. Ages 9+ Pysanky is the Ukrainian word for decorated eggs made using the wax-resist &quot;batik&quot; method, in which designs are drawn or written onto the egg with beeswax (&ldquo;pysaty&rdquo; means &ldquo;to write&rdquo;), and then submerged in a series of dye baths. Beautiful and intricate, they are widely recognized and extremely popular, but their origins and traditional purpose are often overlooked. Pysanky are talismans imbued with symbols of protection and goodwill, and making them is a ritual act, a meditation. In our age of materialism, pysanky have become art objects and in the interest of convenience and speed, they are made using mass-produced dyes and tools. However, before aniline dyes became widely available, dyes were mostly made from natural materials readily available. Sourcing and creating natural dyes, as well as co-creating with nature, are integral to the ritual.

4-week workshop series with Shalva Makharashvili and Andrea Kuzmich Participate in a rich folk tradition that has been passed down through generation. In this workshop, the instructors will teach a variety of songs, ranging from lively toasting and horse-riding songs to meditative chants. The instructors will provide lyrics and occasionally notated scores, but all songs will be taught by ear, as this is the most effective way to convey the unique musical nuances of this tradition. The workshop will focus on developing specific vocal techniques that are characteristic of Georgian singing. If time and enthusiasm permit, the instructors may even teach a round dance, including both the song and the movements&mdash;it&#39;s a lot of fun! The instructors will explain each song in the context of Georgia&rsquo;s diverse regional styles, genres, and cultural narratives.

Kosa Folk Arts aims to bring people closer to the earth, and to one another, through folk art tradition. We envision a growing community built around learning and embracing traditional village ways, through folk art, song, dance, and food.&nbsp; We envision engagement in all the best aspects of village life: communal living &amp; cooperation, close connection to the earth, creative expression, and meaningful ritual and celebration. By exploring and sharing the cultural heritage of Eastern Europe and its diasporas, we preserve and cultivate ancient knowledge and wisdom into a vibrant and spirited living tradition.
