Garton Herbarium. 💻 Joining Us Online?CLICK HERE TO JOIN THE ZOOM WEBINARWebinar ID: 872 0774 4006 Description:Every herbarium voucher preserves more than a plant; it captures a place and moment in time, and with it a small piece of a much larger botanical story. Explore the history of the Claude E. Garton Herbarium through specimens collected long before its founding, Claude Garton’s earliest collections, and the Herbarium’s formal establishment in 1967. Follow the collection as it flourished under Garton’s curatorship, reaching far beyond the region through international exchange while drawing other important botanical collections into its care, and continuing to evolve under the stewards who followed him. Still growing through those who explore and document the region today, the Herbarium remains both an archive of the landscapes that came before us and a botanical history still being written, one specimen at a time. Presenter Bio:Myles Cummins is the Associate Botanist at Lakehead University’s Claude E.Garton Herbarium, where he has worked with the collection since 2019. He spends his days preserving plants and piecing together the stories held within their carefully labelled sheets, using the collection to support research, teaching, and a wider appreciation of northwestern Ontario’s botanical heritage. He holds an MSc in Forestry and is currently a PhD candidate at Lakehead University, where he is investigating how northern carnivorous plant lineages capture, digest, and benefit from their prey. Most recently, he helped research and develop Out of Place: The Strange Plants of LakeSuperior’s North Shore, drawing upon the Herbarium’s collections to share some of theregion’s lesser-known botanical stories.
