Artist Bio

Jasonda Desmond is a self-taught textile and bioplastics artist and illustrator who uses visual storytelling to imbue her work with a sense of magical realism inspired by the living energy of nature – those seen and unseen elements of the earth that enmesh us with the universe and each other. Jasonda identifies as disabled, neurodivergent and queer. She was born in Texas, USA, immigrated to Canada in 2004, and is currently living in Burnaby, BC (hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓ speaking peoples lands). Always creative as a child, Jasonda began her art practice by creating surface designs in Microsoft Paint as a teenager. In 2019 she transitioned her practice to ink and watercolour and cultivated a vibrant, graphic style of illustrating portraits and florals. In 2022, she started experimenting with textile-based jewelry and developing her own art materials from plant-based bioplastics. Jasonda is currently focused on creating fine and wearable art pieces made from her proprietary bioplastic materials and is seeking opportunities to collaborate with other artists and creators.

"Dolly Parton's life and music has always been a personal and artistic inspiration for me. After hearing of her passing, I had planned to create a commemorative portrait of her. Knowing that she was a strong public supporter of the trans community, when I heard about the call for the auction, I felt that my portrait had found a home! I drew inspiration for this work from her freespirited song "Wildflowers", and like to imagine that if there is an afterlife, a style icon like her must be experimenting with amazing new hairstyles that go far beyond the limits of earth's physics."

Melissa learned to knit from her mom when she was 8, but she immediately lost interest because she couldn't make clothing. Fast forward 20 years, while prepping for her first international flight she walked past a bookstore with a knitting book in the window. Inner landscape work is a deep tending of the client’s interior realms, tuning in to the somatic body through deep feeling, & moving in tandem with the inner language of the client. The client is held in a container & lead into their own inner landscape through intuitive trance to tend to parts of the body that are ready to show themselves & be supported.

Utilizing the felt sense in the body we move deeper into where we are still holding energy, emotions, & stories that no longer serve the client’s current life. We most often will support who we call marginalized selves who have become stuck in the margins of our experience when they were not able to be their full expression of self & became stuck in the moment of an old story & a limiting decision they were forced to make. The heart of this work is to support these selves in a robust & intimate way that allows these selves to step back into their full expression & power to restore this energy back to the life force of the client— to restore them from the margins back to the center! Through this support the inner selves & the client are able to make new decisions & step back into their fullness.

The meat of inner landscape work comes from daily life, & so with this work we are investigating the emotions, physical sensations, repeating feelings, & triggers that our daily life is presenting to us. With the body as the compass, clients may show up to an inner landscape session without knowing what energy they will be tracking. Folks can also bring particular sensations like “the feeling i will disappear when someone is upset with me,” “the rock in my stomach,” “the sensation it will all crumble away if i do not xyz," “the endless grief in my heart.” These are simple examples of the range of energies we are able to track & tend to in inner landscape sessions.
