How can examples of struggle, resistance, excitement, and inspiration be gleaned from the everyday and the mundane? Further, how do we embrace subtlety in a genre of poetry that is most often rewarded for being loud, direct, on the nose? Join us for a reading of Rice Against the Machines poetry and writing, followed by a screening of Patrick de Belen's award winning filmography. Patrick de Belen is a Toronto-based Filipinx-Canadian storyteller, arts educator, spoken word poet, writer, and filmmaker. His poetry, films and other projects often explore themes of mental illness, his Filipino culture, liberation, community, grief and healing. He is most known for his poetic collaborations with the Toronto Raptors, the NFL, CBC, his 2 spoken word EPs and multiple cine-poems he wrote and directed himself. Christopher Tse (he/him) is an educator, organizer, and award-winning writer based in Whitehorse, Yukon. A two-time international poetry slam runner-up, he uses storytelling to explore identity, resistance, and the intersections of art and power. His work has appeared on stages, airwaves, and graffiti walls. His first children's book, A Song for the Paper Children, was released in May 2024 with Plumleaf Press. Anto Chan is a Queer Chinese-Canadian spoken word performance artist, facilitator, mentor, producer, and writer. He performed his one-person show Love So Far at the Montreal Fringe Festival in 2019 and Guelph Fringe Festival in 2024, blending humour, vulnerability, and introspection to explore his history of love and personal transformation. His poetry chapbook Romantic Reflections was released in 2020, and his full-length album InnerGenerational is set to launch in February 2025 at the Replay Storytelling Festival.
