Presentation Overview If you have left an IEP meeting unsure what was agreed, or wondering whether the goals on the page will make a real difference for your child, you are not alone. An IEP is only as useful as the goals and supports written into it, and only if the school team understands it and uses it. Many parents go into these meetings unsure what to ask for, how to judge a proposed goal, or where their own knowledge of their child fits.In this practical session, Tana Richards will walk BC parents and caregivers through each stage of the IEP process, from preparing for the meeting to checking the final document and beyond. The presentation will cover what a strong, strengths-based IEP looks like and how to make sure your child’s voice is part of it. Parents will come away with an understanding of:

How to prepare for an IEP meeting, including what to review in advance, how to write a short student profile, how to set your priorities, and how to send the team an agenda

The five questions every goal should answer, and how to spot goals that measure compliance instead of a useful skill

How to share what you see at home, such as communication, sleep, sensory needs and motivators, so goals reflect your whole child

How BC’s Core Competencies (Communication, Thinking, Personal and Social) can shape your child’s goals

How to turn concerns like school avoidance, work “refusal” and leaving the classroom into supportive, skill-building goals

What meaningful consultation means, how to ask for clear language, and how to confirm who is responsible for what before the meeting ends

Parents will also leave with questions they can bring to their next IEP meeting. This workshop provides general information. District forms and procedures vary, and it is not a substitute for individual advocacy or legal advice.
