Memory Lane is a community-led project transforming a neglected canal corridor between Haggerston and London Fields into a safe, green public space for East London. We’re raising money for a new securer storage area to protect the space and be able to maintain it easier as a community— and, importantly, to protect the tools that make it possible for the community to look after it. We’ve already had tools stolen from the site. Every time this happens, it costs us more than the value of the tools themselves. It means replacing equipment instead of buying plants, materials and resources. It means fewer volunteer days, less maintenance and more time spent trying to recover what we’ve lost. If we can’t protect the tools, it becomes harder and harder for the community to protect the space. Memory Lane reimagines the canal as a walkable landscape that reconnects people to place through nature, movement and shared experience. Community stories and memories are woven into the route through planting, seating and small-scale interventions, creating a public space that belongs to the people who use it. The new gate and fence will give us a secure base for our tools and help us keep doing the work that makes Memory Lane possible.
