This artwork reflects the theme by exploring the quiet growth of confidence, health and wellbeing beneath the surface. Flowers in bloom symbolise the emergence of an inner smile, one that develops through care, trust and nurturing before it is ever seen. Inspired by natures ability to heal and reassure, the piece softens clinical boundaries and invites calm reflection.
The work celebrates what lies behind a smile, the resilience, dignity and inner joy that dental care seeks to restore and protect.

Captured just before 5 a.m. on a summer morning at Kelly’s Hotel, Rosslare, this image holds the gentle stillness of a world about to awaken. The silhouetted trees frame a calm, expansive sea while the first light of dawn softly breaks across the horizon. Clouds begin to disperse, revealing a promise of warmth and renewal.
This photograph reflects the essence of mindfulness and mental well-being — a moment of pause between darkness and light, uncertainty and hope. Its tranquil tones and natural balance invite reflection, calm, and quiet optimism. Ideal for contemplative spaces, this piece brings a sense of reassurance and new beginnings to any environment.

Both of my pieces incorporate the use of vibrant colours, which for me really lift my mood. In Calm Amongst the Chaos, the process of applying the paint and making marks with various tools is a really mindful experience in of itself. The dynamic background represents the busy nature of life with the butterfly, hummingbird and ladybirds being a reminder to us all to stop, pause and take notice of the world around us.

The piece titled Be Kind uses nature as my inspiration. The title Be Kind was a tribute to my nana, who was always kind and loved to be out in her garden. She loved butterflies and all the creatures that came to visit. The rainbow in this piece is a symbol of inclusion, diversity, and hope. All of these elements, for me, including the title, are components for mental wellbeing.

This series captures quiet, candid moments of everyday life in and around Mwanza, Tanzania, photographed from a minibus while travelling with the Bridge2Aid team.
Passing through villages and open fields, I captured people in the flow of their day, working, walking, or pausing just long enough to notice the camera. Occasionally, a smile was returned, creating a brief but meaningful connection between us.
These unplanned exchanges reflect the idea of The Smile Within as something simple and deeply human, a shared moment of recognition that holds warmth, resilience and connection beyond words.
One can imagine the mindfulness of the work going on in the fields, or perhaps the sense that this quiet landscape holds something the person is searching for.
It’s a beautiful view to fall into and reflect on, and would look well-placed in any dental reception or treatment room.

Dentistry is a stressful profession and before my recent retirement, I had owned and worked in two predominantly NHS General Practices for 40 years. I have also represented my colleagues for over 30 0f those years.
Everyone needs something to take them away from the day-to-day stresses, and for me, it is nature. I spend a lot of time in my garden and as much of the other time immersed in nature as I can.

I first picked up a camera after qualifying as a RN dentist sent to the Far East and Middle East. Subsequently my clinical peripatetic experience developed working with USA dental charities in Latin America and East Africa which inevitably lead to volunteering with B2A. I always had a camera by my side. In practice we always encouraged all staff in pro bono work and charitable help for the community , city and continents.

Aplomb in ballet represents perfect balance, control, and effortless grace. In dentistry, this same poise is essential—where precision, stability, and confidence guide every movement. Like a dancer holding form with strength and elegance, a clinician restores harmony and beauty with skilled hands. This painting reflects the delicate intersection of art and science, where true mastery lies in balance and composure.

Nurturing Smile captures the quiet power of warmth and care—where a smile blooms gently, like flowers in soft light. It reflects the essence of dentistry beyond technique: the ability to comfort, heal, and restore confidence. A tranquil escape unfolds in Elysium, where nature is caught in a moment of quiet harmony. A gentle stream curves through the composition, its cool blue tones shimmering as it cascades softly over rocks, inviting the eye to follow its rhythmic flow.
On either side, autumn breathes life into the landscape—trees ablaze in rich crimsons, warm ochres, and fading greens create a tapestry of seasonal transition. The striking white birch trunks stand tall in the foreground, their elegance contrasting against the fiery foliage, adding both balance and depth. Light filters delicately through the canopy, suggesting a serene, almost sacred stillness—an untouched sanctuary where time slows.
Elysium evokes a sense of peace and refuge, a place where nature’s beauty feels both vivid and restorative—an idyllic realm that exists somewhere between memory and imagination.

In this piece, The swan rests within a moment of near stillness. The water holds and reflects its beautiful surroundings without disturbance. Time feels slowed and gently suspended on this dreamy spring day. A reminder that stillness can carry its own quiet depth and grace.
“A Quiet Bloom” is a collection of spring paintings exploring gentle moments in nature. I am drawn to the in-between: the pause, the hush, the subtle movements that often go unnoticed. Using layered washes of watercolour, impressionistic brushstrokes and a colour palette befitting spring, I do not aim to capture the subject perfectly, but I paint the feeling of being present within them.
Each piece is intentionally small and intimate, an invitation to come closer and to engage in a moment of quiet observation, to slow down, to notice softness and to reconnect with the gentle beauty of the natural world. I would also like to give credit to my lovely teacher and mentor, Alicia Aradilla and Marty from storm lamp studios whom these works have been inspired by.

In this piece, the start of spring; the warmth begins to return after the short, dark days of winter and the landscape slowly awakens. …a piece about settling the noise of life to find peace and perspective.
This piece explores the journey to find a place of contentment with an honestly about the barriers we have to clamber over to find a path or space to embrace it.
The mountains for me are that place of connection!
The physical act of the climb and the mental resilience to persevere. The unpredictable conditions under foot and the promise of the breathtaking beauty just out of sight is a vivid picture of faith and living out a purpose on the path chosen for us.
There is something special about the preparation to meet the mountain.
The mental focus of the climb, the push of your body, the internal pep talk, the wind in you face that scatters every thought and the reveal of natures perfect canvas when you reach the top…
…it’s in that moment you find freedom to immerse in beauty, the ability to control and feel your every breath, you give yourself time to allow your senses sing and there is release!
Able to be still, able to be at rest, able to outwork the smile within.

The combination of the fog and the tall trees create this atmospheric image. The people are walking along an avenue of trees towards a vertical beacon of light which is reminiscent of many science fiction scenes that depict an alternative universe.
Picture taken with my iPhone11 at Umberslade Park, Tanworth in Arden, West Midlands, in January 2021 during our third and longest lockdown during the COVID epidemic. This place is very close to home and so allowed us to undertake our government permitted exercise walks. The story of people meeting in the fog is intriguing and captures the imagination.
Postscript - in 2025, the trees were felled as they had come to the end of their life. The avenue no longer exists although there are plans to plant more trees in the future.

The poppy field was near Kinver Edge, and I arrived before sunrise. The poppies were behind a fence, so I needed my long lens to get a good view of the wildflowers. I set up my tripod, focusing on several poppies near the front of the field. I had time on my side, with around 30 minutes until sunrise; as I was taking my picture, the poppies took on a magical look in the cool dawn light. The timeless quality and the kaleidoscope of colours in the picture provide a connection to the beauty of our wildflower fields.
