Learn traditional hedgelaying and help local wildlife thrive 🌿 Join us for a practical, hands-on training session where you’ll work on a real hedge in one of Thame's public parks, guided by tutors. You’ll learn safe hand-tool use, key techniques, and how a well-managed hedge supports birds, insects, and small mammals.Hedgelaying involves making diagonal cuts near the base of trees within the hedge and then bending the trunk at a diagonal. We will then put stakes in along the hedge and weave flexible branches along the top. It will regrow vigorously both from the base and along the bent over trunk, thickening up the hedge. This hugely improves it as a quality wildlife habitat. No experience needed; just bring curiosity and a willingness to get stuck in. The work requires basic physical fitness but technique is most important, so you do not need to be strong; and open to adults of all ages. No under 18s for this one, sorry! If you have pre-existing injuries or accessibility needs and want to find out more before signing up, email us on contactus@21stcenturythame.co.uk. Training is free but if you are able to make a contribution to our nature recovery work, you are welcome to make a donation if you wish.
