These creative writing workshops will explore some of the basic principles of geology, from how sediments get turned to rock, to how tectonic plates move and why volcanoes form. The sessions will be structured around the rock cycle - the idea that all rocks are in a constant process of transformation from one type to another. Throughout these sessions we will explore not just the concepts themselves, but also how writers and artists have expressed and developed these ideas in their work over time. We will draw inspiration from a diverse range of writers, from the Pochveniks ("poets of the soil") to experimental Oulipian works, with a bit of Shakespeare and Tennyson thrown in alongside more modern writers. You will be given the space to respond in the moment to creative writing prompts inspired by the topics and pieces explored, so that you come away with a notebook full of new writings to expand upon outside of these sessions. We welcome participants from all walks of life - you don't have to be a professional writer or geologist to take part, and you certainly don't have to share any of your writings with the group if you don't want to. Please note that these sessions will take place online, and through the medium of English, although participants are welcomed to contribute, write, and ask questions in Welsh. Throughout we will ask questions like: What happens when rocks become verbs, as opposed to nouns? How deep is time? How deep is place? How can we express and respond to our "earthiness"? Week 1: SedimentaryKey words: layers, pages, unconformity, memory, record, erosion, archive, accumulation, ruins, weathering, deposition, cementation, fossils, grains, remains, burial, forgotten.Case studies: Traeth Lleiniog erratics, and Penmon limestones. Week 2: MetamorphicKey words: transformation, recrystallisation, heat, reinvention, pressure, stress, remnant, memory, distortion, deformation, folding, foliation.Case studies: The South Stack metasediments, and blueschists of Llanfairpwll. Week 3: IgneousKey words: magma, destruction, lava, rebirth, cooling, fire, crystallisation, eruption, forge, intrusion, extrusion, molten, smoke.Case studies: The Coedana granites, and Palaeozoic dyke swarms. Week 4: EvanescenceThe second half of this workshop will give you the chance share your writings, thoughts and questions from the previous sessions.Key words: cycles, change, deep time, transformation, palimpsest, journey, renewal, return, continuity, memory, the forgotten, origins, endings, rhythm, storytelling. Workshop leaders: Maia Whomsley-Walker is a director of GeoMôn and geologist with a passion for fault and fracture systems. She writes in her spare times and takes great joy in finding new and delightful ways to talk about rocks. Sarah Wordsworth is a poet, nature writer, and amateur geologist based on Anglesey. -------------------------------------------------------------- Bydd y gweithdai ysgrifennu creadigol hyn yn archwilio rhai o egwyddorion sylfaenol daeareg, o'r ffordd y mae gwaddodion yn troi'n greigiau, i sut mae platiau tectonig yn symud a pham mae llosgfynyddoedd yn ffurfio. Bydd y sesiynau wedi'u trefnu o amgylch y cylch creigiau – y syniad bod pob craig mewn proses barhaus o drawsnewid o un math i'r llall. Drwy gydol y sesiynau hyn, byddwn yn archwilio nid yn unig y cysyniadau eu hunain, ond hefyd sut mae awduron ac artistiaid wedi mynegi a datblygu'r syniadau hyn yn eu gwaith dros amser. Sylwch y bydd y sesiynau hyn yn cael eu cynnal ar-lein ac yn Saesneg, ond croeso i gyfranogwyr gyfrannu, ysgrifennu a gofyn cwestiynau yn Gymraeg. Drwy gydol y cwrs, byddwn yn gofyn cwestiynau fel: Beth sy'n digwydd pan fydd creigiau'n troi'n ferfau, yn hytrach nag enwau? Pa mor ddwfn yw amser? Pa mor ddwfn yw lle?
