The story of the Muskingum County Arts Council is one of vision, dedication, and grassroots community passion. It began as an ambitious idea among local creative advocates and a vision revealed in the Muskingum County Commissioners' Strategic Plan. Starting in Fall 2022 discussions carefully evolved into a structured organization through efforts of volunteers and guidance from consultants, Janus Small & Associates. Established Governance and Official Status: The board drafted and formalized our official Articles of Incorporation, Mission & Vision, Constitution and Bylaws, created our logo and website, and achieved official 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status. Secured Funding: We secured vital early funding from local organizations and individuals, the Muskingum County Commissioners and The J.W. and M.H Straker Charitable Foundation. Leadership Transition: Recognizing the need for professional, dedicated stewardship to take our mission to the next level, the board conducted a comprehensive search and proudly welcomed its first Executive Director in November 2025. 2026 Accomplishments of the Muskingum County Arts Council Expanding Community Support: MCAC has stepped up to support local artists, educators, and cultural groups -reinforcing our role as "a Port Authority for the Arts. Building Countywide Resources: MCAC initiated the development of a comprehensive cultural asset map cataloging arts, culture, and heritage resources throughout Muskingum County; also, MCAC is creating an online directory of working artists and hobby artists in Muskingum County, directly furthering our mission of economic development and relevant community programming. County-wide Reach: Two of the three events for children that we hosted were located outside of Zanesville (Roseville and New Concord); we are planning events for 2027 that will be located in Dresden, Philo, New Concord, and other locations within Muskingum County. Offering unique cultural experiences: A legendary former poet laureate from the City of Knoxville performed in Zanesville! This event was sponsored by various community partners, including The Muskingum County Community Foundation, Weasel Boy Brewing, and Visit Zanesville. Youth Classes: Thanks to a grant from The J.W. and M.H. Straker Charitable Foundation, we offered four classes for children that were held throughout the county. Muskingum County Youth Poet Laureate: This local program is part of a prestigious national program for young poets who want to make a difference in their community through civic engagement. It was started in Muskingum County thanks to generous support from the Ohio Arts Council.
