Francis Sahr Nabieu has spent the last five years working with First Things Foundation to bring clean water to communities in Sierra Leone. Together, Francis and FTF have completed four water wells. Now Francis is building something of his own. Francis is starting a small soap business near his home. He plans to produce affordable scented palm-oil soap and sell it directly to retailers in villages where transportation makes basic goods harder to access. Francis has already put substantial money and labor into the project himself. He has invested roughly $1,500 in constructing the building where the soap will be made. His cousin Faya will manage daily production, with Francis and members of his family helping as needed. Francis will oversee the business and transport finished soap by motorcycle to retailers in surrounding villages. The business gives Francis a way to support his family and become less dependent on outside funding. As the first male child in a family of 17 children, Francis carries responsibility for several younger siblings and relatives who live with him. This project also comes after years of Francis helping other communities before asking First Things for support for himself. His first project with FTF was a water well for the village where he grew up. He then helped complete wells for three additional villages. Funds raised through this campaign will help Francis equip the soap business, purchase the materials needed to begin production and get the business operating. Francis has already built the place. Now we&rsquo;re helping him put it to work.
