Help the Sugar Creek Historical Society and descendants of Thorntown&#39;s Derrickson family honor the eternal residents of Thorntown Colored Cemetery with a memorial stone. This stone will feature the names of the buried residents and have a scannable QR code linking researchers to the information about the residents, the community and Thorntown.&nbsp; Thorntown Colored Cemetery is the last remaining piece of Thorntown&#39;s African American community in the late 1800s and early 1900s. The land the cemetery is on was purchased from Quakers in 1869 on what is now known as County Road 825 West. Before an Eagle Scout project in 2016, only about 20 residents were known to be buried there. Thanks to Reece Thompson&#39;s research, as well as the combined research of descendants of the Derrickson family have named 31 eternal residents of the cemetery. Only four or five stones remaining standing, and none are legible.&nbsp; As names were confirmed, researchers learned there is only one Civil War veteran buried in the cemetery, whereas three were previously believed to be buried there. John A. Shad is the only known Civil War veteran buried in the cemetery. Historical newspapers, magazines and books list Elisha Derricks as a White soldier buried in the cemetery. It has been confirmed Elisha, is buried in Thorntown&#39;s Old Cemetery.&nbsp; Researchers once believed, Elijah Jefferson Derrickson, Civil War veteran and brother to Charles Derrickson who is buried in Thorntown Colored Cemetery was the second Civil War veteran buried there. Many records show varied spellings of his name, making it easy to confuse Elisha Derricks and Elijah Derrickson.
