When this fragile puppy arrived for emergency care, veterinarians initially feared he had swallowed something dangerous. The X-rays revealed something even more shocking: a long, stick-like object was lodged partly in his esophagus and partly in his stomach.It extended so far into his tiny body that the veterinary team worried it may have caused a perforation or other life-threatening damage. The doctors at BluePearl said they had never seen anything quite like it.But Ody had already survived so much&mdash;and we were not going to give up on him.His bloodwork was strong enough for the veterinary team to attempt an emergency endoscopic procedure. We held our breath as they carefully tried to remove the object without putting his weakened body through major surgery.Then came the words we had been praying for:&ldquo;They got it!&rdquo;The object was successfully removed. Ody had made it through the first enormous hurdle&mdash;but his fight is not over.Because he is so severely emaciated, simply feeding him again must be done slowly and carefully. His medical team is monitoring him closely for refeeding syndrome, dangerous changes in his potassium levels, and other complications that can occur when a starving body begins receiving nourishment again.
