For years, the animals of our community have relied on the Greensburg Decatur County Animal Shelter for safety, care, and a second chance at life. The staff and volunteers work tirelessly to rescue, protect, and find loving homes for dogs and cats who have nowhere else to go. But the shelter itself is no longer adequate for the job.The current facility sits in a flood plain, and in just the past year alone the entire shelter has had to evacuate twice due to flooding. Each time, staff and volunteers have had to scramble to move every animal to safety. While the dedication of those caring for these animals is incredible, the reality is that this situation is not sustainable and puts both animals and staff at risk. Our community&rsquo;s dogs and cats deserve better. They deserve a safe, modern shelter that protects them from the elements, provides proper space and care, and gives them the best chance to find loving homes. That&rsquo;s why we are raising funds to help build a new shelter for our community. This project is about more than a building. It&rsquo;s about ensuring that every abandoned, lost, or rescued animal has a safe place to go, no matter the weather or circumstances. It is well past time to build a new shelter.
