Return the Prophetstown Seeds Home More than 200 years ago, Shawnee leaders Tecumseh and Tenskwatawa helped bring Native people from many nations together at Prophetstown, near present-day Lafayette, Indiana. Families and communities brought their seeds, agricultural knowledge, languages, and traditions with them, making Prophetstown an extraordinary place of intertribal relationship and exchange. After the Battle of Tippecanoe and the dispersal of the community at Prophetstown, seeds connected to this history were carried away from the land where they had once grown. Through generations of care by Indigenous seedkeepers and with the support of Ho-Chunk allies, historic Prophetstown corn has been preserved and rematriated to the Shawnee people. In 2026, these seeds returned to Prophetstown. This spring, the Shawnee Seed Sanctuary successfully planted historic Prophetstown corn on the land where this story began more than two centuries ago.The planting was an extraordinary milestone&mdash;but it was only the beginning.Throughout the growing season, we are continuing to steward and protect the corn as it grows. This fall, we hope to bring tribal and Indigenous community representatives back to Prophetstown for a harvest gathering centered on the seeds, the land, and the relationships that connect our communities to this place.
