Date and Time: Saturday, October 31, 2026 | 3:00–6:00 p.m.Event Description: Rising Sun Development Center (RSDC) will present the exclusive Atlanta screening of the Award Winning Movie Threads of Us: Stitching the Fabric of a Nation, followed by an in-depth audience discussion with the film’s writer and producer, Donisha Prendergast, granddaughter of Bob & Rita Marley.Set in Kingston, Jamaica, this 75-minute feature film tells the story of Danielle, a gifted seamstress and factory worker whose search for truth challenges what she believes about love, loyalty, justice, survival, and the cost of silence. While grounded in the Jamaican experience, the film examines issues shared throughout the African Diaspora, including systemic inequality, colonial legacies, cultural identity, family, resistance, and the continuing pursuit of freedom and self-determination. Following the screening, Donisha Prendergast will discuss the film’s creation, its connection to Jamaica’s independence journey, and the importance of using storytelling to preserve history, challenge injustice, and strengthen relationships among African-descended communities. The program will provide an educational and culturally enriching experience that connects Jamaica’s history to broader African, Caribbean, African American, and Pan-African liberation movements. The facilitated discussion will encourage attendees to consider what independence means for communities still navigating the social, political, cultural, and economic effects of colonialism.Presented as part of the film’s “64 Screenings for 64 Years of Independence” tour, this community event aligns strongly with the Auburn Avenue Research Library’s commitment to preserving and promoting African American history, culture, and the experiences of people throughout the African Diaspora. The program is intended for an intergenerational audience of approximately 240 community members, including educators, students, artists, filmmakers, cultural workers, advocates, and residents interested in Jamaican history, Pan-African culture, social justice, and independent filmmaking.
