Sustain the Midwife. Sustain Community Birth. A midwife gets sick. Their child needs them. Someone they love dies. A family emergency happens. Or their body is simply telling them they cannot keep going without rest. And still, the phone may ring. Community midwives build their lives around being available to others. We miss holidays, leave dinners unfinished, sleep with our phones beside us, and stay close to home for weeks at a time. When a client needs care, we show up.But when the midwife needs care, stepping away is not simple. Clients still need appointments. Someone must remain on call. Another midwife must be ready to leave their own family and practice to step in for someone else’s family. Safe coverage is arranged, but there is rarely a system to pay for it. Too often, that cost falls entirely on the midwife who is already facing illness, loss, an emergency, or another hardship. Sometimes the need to step away is planned. Midwives must maintain certifications, practice emergency skills, continue their education, and keep up with a changing profession. But attending a training often means paying another midwife to remain on call or care for clients while also giving up income for the day. This is how burnout happens. It is how skilled midwives become exhausted, financially strained, and eventually leave work they once loved. The MA-NACPM CARE Fund was created because appreciation is not enough. Midwives need something practical to catch them when life happens.The fund helps eligible Massachusetts community midwives pay for safe clinical coverage in two situations:<ul><li>During an emergency or hardship, including illness, injury, grief, family crisis, disaster, or another unexpected event that requires a midwife to step away.</li><li>While attending essential professional development, including education, emergency-skills training, certification programs, continuing education, and conferences.</li></ul>The CARE Fund does not replace a midwife’s responsibility to arrange safe care. It helps pay the midwife who steps in and makes that care possible. Your donation supports more than one person. It supports the midwife who needs permission to be human. It supports the midwife who rearranges their own life to provide coverage. And it supports the families whose care continues safely and without interruption. If a midwife has ever answered your call, sat beside you through uncertainty, missed sleep to care for your family, or helped you feel safe during one of the biggest moments of your life, this is one way to care for them in return. Tribute gifts may honor or remember a particular midwife but cannot be earmarked for that person’s direct benefit.
