Over the past three years, Umuwi&#39;s work has taken root in Chicago and Illinois, thanks to the collective power of educators, social justice leaders, parents, and students. Together, we have brought justice-centered practices into classrooms, giving students the chance to see their histories, identities, and lived experiences reflected and affirmed in their education. We are here. And, we will not back down. We are building an Umuwi Ethnic Studies Institute!&nbsp; The Institute will be the first independent training program in Illinois and Chicago for pre-service and early-career educators, grounded in anti-colonial, liberatory pedagogy and curricula.&nbsp; Why does the Institute matter? The road ahead is not getting easier. We are witnessing a full-frontal assault on the right to know, the right to make knowledge, and the right to tell the truth. Executive orders are stripping funding for teaching about systemic racism. Schools are self-censoring. &quot;Truth crime&quot; laws have passed in some form in nearly every state&mdash;including Illinois&mdash;mandating that teachers lie to students about the history of systemic oppression.&nbsp; The Institute will be an autonomous program, free from institutional compromise, that ensures educators have access to sustained Ethnic Studies training.&nbsp; Sparkplug Foundation seeded this vision with a $20,000 investment. This is a powerful start, but it&#39;s just the beginning. We need your support to raise $150,000 to bring the Institute fully to life and sustain it for the educators who need it most.
