A Museum Beyond Walls Dance is one of humanity&#39;s oldest forms of knowledge. It carries culture across generations, preserves memory when written records do not exist, and tells stories that cannot be captured in words alone. Yet the history of dance remains fragmented. Millions of photographs, recordings, programs, oral histories, costumes, and archival records are scattered across thousands of institutions, communities, and personal collections around the world. Many remain invisible to one another. Some are at risk of being lost forever. The International Museum of Dance was created to change that. Part of our mission is to build the world&#39;s first connected digital constellation of dance history &mdash; linking archives, repositories, cultural institutions, and living traditions into a single, accessible network. Rather than collecting and removing materials from their homes, we connect existing collections and make their relationships visible, allowing people to discover how dance traditions influence, inspire, and intersect with one another across continents and generations. Launching with the Jerome Robbins Dance Division of the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts at Lincoln Center, the IMOD Dance Constellation will grow to include ALL FORMS OF DANCE, including ballet, modern dance, hip hop, breaking, folk traditions, ceremonial dances, regional companies, community studios, and cultural forms that have never before had a place within a global dance archive. This work is critical and urgent. Archives deteriorate. Institutions close. Artists pass on. Communities lose access to their own cultural histories. Every year, irreplaceable knowledge disappears. At the same time, secure, tested, and viable software from our partnership with Australia&#39;s National Museum of Screen Culture (acmi.net.au) now makes it possible to connect these histories without removing or acquiring them from the communities and institutions that protect them. Every item included in the Constellation is curated by professional, licensed archivists who work directly with collection holders. The platform does not use artificial intelligence to generate, interpret, or describe archival content. Human expertise remains at the center of everything we do because preserving cultural history requires care, context, and accountability. Your support directly funds the archivists, researchers, artists, and cultural partners who bring these stories into the Constellation.
