Appalachian Memory & Aging Initiative

The Appalachian Memory & Aging Initiative enhances the lives of those affected by dementia through education, support services, and community engagement, fostering understanding and connection among families facing memory loss challenges.

Learn what Alzheimer&rsquo;s blood tests can &ndash; and cannot &ndash; tell you.&nbsp; This educational session is your opportunity to hear from local dementia experts who will explain how blood biomarker testing works, what information it provides, and what results mean for you or a family member.&nbsp; Who Should Attend? ➡️ Individuals concerned about changes in memory &nbsp;➡️ Family members or caregivers of someone with memory changes➡️ Those who have received a dementia diagnosis and want a deeper understanding of the condition➡️ Healthcare providers and mental health professionals who treat older adults➡️ Anyone who wants to know more about Alzheimer&#39;s and other dementias Presenters for this event are Andrea Sartori, PhD, a clinical neuropsychologist, and Kelley Kinder, MA, a licensed professional counselor and PsyD Candidate.&nbsp; This educational session is hosted by the Appalachian Memory &amp; Aging Initiative, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, in partnership with&nbsp;The Brain Clinic, located in Abingdon, Virginia.

Alzheimer's Blood Testing: What You Need to Know

The Memory Mile Walk is a community event dedicated to honoring loved ones affected by dementia, raising awareness, and supporting families impacted by memory loss and other cognitive changes. Participants will walk together at sunset in a meaningful, family-friendly setting, celebrating memories while helping fund local education, early detection, and support services. Every step taken brings connection, remembrance, and a stronger path forward for those living with dementia and their care partners.Together, we will walk one mile through the heart of Abingdon, beginning at the Visitor&rsquo;s Center and continuing east along Main Street to the Washington County Courthouse, where we will pause for a group photo. The walk will then return west along Main Street, concluding back at the Visitor&rsquo;s Center. Participants are encouraged to wear purple and will be provided with a battery-operated candle to carry throughout the walk, both as a symbol of hope and to raise awareness for those impacted by dementia. Along the route, luminaria will line the path, each one dedicated in memory or in honor of a loved one, creating a powerful and moving tribute that reflects both remembrance and resilience.

Aging Well in Appalachia

The Appalachian Memory &amp; Aging Initiative invites you to a conversation about Dementia Healthcare: What does good dementia care look like?&nbsp;How can you partner with your healthcare team in seeking this care?&nbsp; This FREE program is an interactive conversation among family caregivers, individuals with memory concerns, and anyone who wants to learn more about dementia care and brain health, led by an interprofessional healthcare team. What to Expect:⭐️ A brief informational presentation⭐️ Connection with your community⭐️ A collaborative time of sharing ideas⭐️ Engagement and fun with Brain Health Jeopardy!⭐️ Giveaways and a Resource Toolkit Who Should Attend?➡️ Individuals concerned about changes in memory &nbsp;➡️ Family members or caregivers of someone with memory changes➡️ Those who have received a dementia diagnosis and want a deeper understanding of the condition➡️ Healthcare providers and mental health professionals who treat older adults➡️ Anyone who wants to know more about Alzheimer&#39;s and other dementias Please note:&nbsp;Attendance is in-person to support community connection and social engagement.&nbsp; This educational session is hosted by the Appalachian Memory &amp; Aging Initiative, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, in partnership with Virginia Commonwealth University&rsquo;s Center on Aging, the Virginia Geriatric Education Center, and The Brain Clinic.
