Workshop 1

Choreo Tools 1- Making Meaning through Movement

Have you ever had a looming choreographic deadline and lost momentum or gotten stuck in the creation phase? Have you ever seen a compelling opportunity to share your work, but struggled with where to start making? Are you an artist who often has multiple projects in process at once and struggles to make them distinct from one another?

In this workshop, movement-based artists will experiment with dancemaking tools for the efficient creation of a homogenous movement language. Led by Bautanzt Here Artistic Director Nadya Zeitlin, Making Meaning through Movement will focus on movement generation exercises and prompts that artists can use to quickly and efficiently develop a robust and specific gestural movement vocabulary that can serve as the seed for a new work.

This workshop is for:

* Anyone with a background in movement or performance-based practices including dance, theater, yoga, and martial arts who is interested in experimenting with new tools for movement generation and nonverbal communication.

* Artists who want to expand their choreographic toolkit and learn ways to create distinct works within a brief timeline or who are feeling creatively “stuck.”

* Dancers and performers who want insight into the Bautanzt Here creative process.

The Choreo Tools 1 workshop experience will begin with a 20-min guided release technique and improvisation warm-up, led by Sammy Spriggs. Participants will then jumpstart a new creative process through guided play and movement generation prompts, led by Nadya Zeitlin. Artists will share, give and receive feedback, and interrogate the ways in which their movement language conveys meaning to an audience. At the end of this 2-hour workshop, participants will have a rich and meaningful gestural movement language from which an entire performance work could be mined.

Documentation 101- Developing Your Artistic Voice with Documentation

You’re working on an application for a grant that fits your interests perfectly but is due at 11:59pm that day. You make it to the end of the narrative where you see it… “please upload a work sample.” You comb through years of rehearsal videos in your cloud storage looking for the right file, and watch the excruciating progress wheel as the file downloads from the cloud and the minutes tick away towards midnight. You run out of time to select the perfect 3 minute clip, and resort to simply uploading the full performance video, hoping that the grant selection panel will find enough value in the first 3 minutes of your work to consider your application. Don’t you wish you had a curated and organized archive to pull from?

In Documentation 101, expert panelists Jordan Young and Anicka Austin will share actionable tools and systems to record, organize and archive your body of work like a pro. Topics will include capturing rehearsal footage for documentation vs marketing, organizing and preserving your repertory, archival, work samples, promo reels and more. Attendees will learn how to easily access and share footage, organize rehearsal and performance documentation to pull from as needed for future opportunities, and build a body of work.

This workshop is for:

* Any artist in a performance-based medium who is curious about documentation best practices.

* Anyone who wants to build their administrative toolkit to support their artmaking.

Workshop 3:

Choreo Tools 2- Structure + Composition in Time, Space and Body

You’ve created and documented your movement seeds. You’re ready to bring other artists into your process and develop your movement into a complex and cohesive performance work. Maybe you have a limited number of rehearsals due to the costs of rehearsal space or paying your collaborators. How can you efficiently take your movement language and expand it into a multifaceted and layered work that lives and breathes? How can you empower your performing collaborators to take ownership over their role in your process and integrate their voice into your work?

In Choreo Tools 2, participating directors/dancemakers will be prompted to explore several avenues forward in collaboration with volunteer dance artists. True to Bautanzt Here’s commitment to public art and site-specific dance theater, participating artists will have the opportunity to play with their movement vocabulary on other bodies in unique public spaces. Nadya Zeitlin will lead artists to consider the humanity of structures and public spaces as they develop their movement material into site-specific performance pieces. Artists will experiment with ways to cultivate varied embodiments of gestural movement phrases and learn tools and exercises for the interrogation of time, relationship, effort, and space in their choreographic process.

This workshop is for:

* Anyone interested in directing other performers in physical and movement-based forms.

* Choreographers/dancemakers who are looking to expand their toolkit and learn new methods for creating work quickly without sacrificing content and depth.

* Anyone curious about making site-specific dance theater.

It is recommended to have participated in Choreo Tools 1 OR to come prepared with gestural movement phrases to use as seed material during the workshop. Participants can bring dancers who they are planning to collaborate with, or can be assigned volunteer dance artists with whom they can collaborate during the workshop. Participants in Choreo Tools 2 will leave with a draft of a new movement-based performance work, and tools/prompts for building a work quickly. Furthermore, participants will receive peer feedback, discuss leadership and accountability in the context of directing/choreographing, and connect with new potential collaborators. The skills and tools obtained in this workshop will also help participating artists be better able to communicate their ideas to funders, collaborators, and audiences.

Grant Writing Seminar- Strategies for an Impactful Application

The idea has been explored, you’ve made plans and considered how you want to share your work with the public, but now you need the funds to make it happen! How do you communicate your artistic vision to funders? What are the best ways to convey your work’s merit to grant panels? How can you demonstrate your depth of thought, consideration and reliability to a financial entity?

In this Grant Writing Seminar, participants will discuss answers to these questions, and have the opportunity to hear panelist feedback to real grant applications and narratives. Presenters will share grant writing dos and don’ts from their experiences as both working artists and grant panelists for funding entities. Topics will include writing a compelling project narrative, thinking through your proposed budget, selecting an impactful work sample, and more!

This workshop is for:

* Artists who are interested in seeking funding to present their work

* Anyone who wants expert feedback on a working grant draft

* Anyone curious about writing about art
