Explore historic weaving techniques on a traditional inkle loom with the Freehold Township Heritage Society. In this hands-on session, you will learn how narrow woven bands were created for everyday use in earlier times. Guided by our volunteers at the Oakley Farmhouse Museum, you will set up a loom, practice basic weaving, and see how simple patterns take shape. THERE ARE TWO CLASS SESSIONS. The first class you will warp your loom and begin to weave. Take the loom home for the week, and continue working on it. When you return on Oct 19, you will finish the strap and remove it from the loom. All materials provided. Your participation supports our mission to preserve and share the history of Freehold Township.

Weaving on an Inkle Loom

Explore the tradition of basketmaking in a hands-on workshop at the historic Oakley Farmhouse Museum. Learn basic weaving techniques, guided step by step, and complete a functional basket to take home. In this October basket weaving workshop, we will be working with flat reed. These baskets will have a square/rectangular bottom and sides. The focus of our basket weaving workshops is to provide you with a basket beginning. The we encourage you to use your own ideas and individual creativity to design and weave a basket unique to you. We guide you in how to use the materials that you choose.Materials for you to choose from will be provided. Feel free to bring flexible materials to incorporate into your basket. This is a good time to recycle such things as ribbon, fabric strips, yarn, plastic strips, and whatever comes to your mind. No two baskets will ever be alike, just as no two people are alike. This program supports the Freehold Township Heritage Society’s mission to preserve and share our local history. Your participation helps keep heritage skills and stories alive for future generations.

Basketmaking: Flat Reed

Learn traditional basketweaving in the historic setting of the Oakley Farmhouse Museum. In this hands-on class, participants will use the twining method to learn to control the weave. Each participant's basket shape and weaving design will be unique. We will supply the basket reed in its natural color which will be used for most of the basket. There will also be some dyed reed and yarn supplied to you to use for a stripe of color here and there. Flat reed will be supplied for you to weave in. Then, when the basket dries at home, you can draw with colored pencils or permanent markers on the flat reed spaces that show on the outside. Feel free to bring some vines (no poison ivy!) or other natural materials, your favorite yarn, ribbon etc. to weave into your basket. Guided by our commitment to preserving local heritage, this program shares skills that early Freehold residents used in daily life. Your registration supports the Freehold Township Heritage Society’s ongoing work to care for the farmhouse and share its history with the community.
