Learn traditional basketweaving in the historic setting of the Oakley Farmhouse Museum. In this hands-on class, participants will use the twining method to learn to control the weave. Each participant's basket shape and weaving design will be unique. We will supply the basket reed in its natural color which will be used for most of the basket. There will also be some dyed reed and yarn supplied to you to use for a stripe of color here and there. Flat reed will be supplied for you to weave in. Then, when the basket dries at home, you can draw with colored pencils or permanent markers on the flat reed spaces that show on the outside. Feel free to bring some vines (no poison ivy!) or other natural materials, your favorite yarn, ribbon etc. to weave into your basket. Guided by our commitment to preserving local heritage, this program shares skills that early Freehold residents used in daily life. Your registration supports the Freehold Township Heritage Society’s ongoing work to care for the farmhouse and share its history with the community.
