The New England Chapter of The Explorers Club

The New England Chapter of The Explorers Club promotes scientific exploration and conservation through events, lectures, and community engagement, fostering a deeper understanding of our planet's natural and cultural heritage.

7:00pm Social Hour - Hotel Bar, second/third floor landing8:00pm Round Table Discussion Begins - Designated room near the Hotel bar A classic New England Explorers Club tradition; the Round Table is an informal gathering of chapter members to connect, swap stories, and celebrate the spirit of exploration that brings us all together. Come hear firsthand accounts of recent expeditions, memorable adventures, unexpected discoveries, and journeys from years past. No formal presentations required, just good stories, good company, and a chance to hear what your fellow members have been up to. We will arrange the room in a circle, ‘round table’ and everyone will have an opportunity to share or present about any of the following:

An expedition you led, or carried out, or in which you participated during the past couple years.

An expedition from longer ago, about which you have not shared information, but which contains some interesting factors that you now wish to share.

A project of exploration and/or discovery that you are planning.

A question about exploration and/or explorers that has caused you to wonder, and about which you wish to question or to inform your friends and colleagues.

A tip concerning something that has really helped you as an explorer and/or researcher, in the field, or in the eternal QFF (Quest for Funding).

An artifact or piece of exploration equipment about which you have something interesting or useful to say, or a question to present.

Even if you do not wish to share, you still have the opportunity to introduce yourself and your interests as well as hear about the amazing work of our fellow explorers! Please note that we will not have a projector or screen, as it’ll be a more low-technology event. That said, if you have maps, photos, etc please bring them! If you have any questions regarding technology needs for your share or about the event, please email Lizzie at newengland@explorers.org. About the Doubletree Hotel and Suites:There is onsite parking in their garage for a fee of $10 or $15.The bar has food and drink that you can purchase. When you arrive in the lobby, go up the main set of stairs, then go up the next set of stairs which will bring you to the bar area. Dr. Martin Nweeia examines teeth on a near-daily basis, but there is one type of tooth that has long held his fascination — one that has taken him to some of the world's most remote and isolated areas. For more than 25 years, the Sharon, Connecticut-based dentist, leading a team of researchers, has been examining the form, purpose and function of the long, straight and spiraled tusk of the narwhal, Primarily found in males; it is a canine tooth that grows from the upper jaw — sometimes up to 10 feet long. "I think it is an animal that stimulates the imagination of the child within us all," said Nweeia, a marine mammal dental expert and one of the world’s top narwhal scientists.Although myths and legends have surrounded narwhals, scientists like Dr. Martin Nweeia have uncovered facts about narwhals that make these animals even more incredible. Get to know the mysterious marine mammals of the Arctic that have fascinated humans for centuries. Learning from the Arctic’s Original ExplorersBecause the Inuit are legally allowed to do subsistence hunting on narwhals, Nweeia was able to get remnants from them and take samples back home. The Inuit already described the tusks more comprehensively than anyone in Western science. They could tell from a tusk where a particular animal was from, which Nweeia found extraordinary: A shorter, thicker task would mean that they came from further north; longer and thinner tusks came from further south. They knew the female tusk, when present, is thinner and more tightly wound. The tusk seems very rigid, but when he was in the field with Inuit hunters, they would say, “Oh, no, no, the tusk bends and flexes.” Most scientists, including myself and other dental experts, thought that would be impossible. So Nweeia got the material back in the lab, and to everyone’s surprise, except the Inuit, the tusk was found to have flexibility that enabled it to bend and flex 12 degrees in all directions. Nweeia realized that Inuit traditional knowledge was a pivotal link to inform and guide the science.Dr. Nweeia has just released a new book titled Narwhal: Revealing an Arctic Legend With an introduction by renowned oceanographer and National Geographic Explorer at Large Dr. Sylvia A. Mallory & Irvine: Why We'll Never Know The Truth Since the discovery of George Mallory's remains at nearly 27,000 feet on Everest's north face in 1999, sleuths around the world have struggled to shed light on whether or not Mallory and Irvine stood on the summit in 1924. My expedition to locate Sandy Irvine in 2019, while failing to locate his body, led to a theory that goes against long-established beliefs about where Irvine was and how he got there. The discovery of Irvine's boot and foot in 2024 on the central Rongbuk Glacier proved that theory correct. In this presentation I will discuss 'what's new' about the efforts to solve the Mystery of Mallory and Irvine and why I believe we'll never know the truth of what happened to them on that fateful day in June of '24. Thom Pollard has spent more than three decades documenting the Himalayas. He has filmed four Everest expeditions, two on the north and two on the south, summited the mountain in 2016 (from the south), and was the high-altitude cameraman on the historic 1999 expedition that discovered the remains of George Mallory at nearly 27,000 feet, 75 years after his disappearance. Thom returned to the north side of Everest in 2019 to look for Mallory's partner, Sandy Irvine. His current film project will shine light on the growing garbage and human waste crisis on Mount Everest (www.everestexposed.com), with an expedition planned for the spring of 2027. As a public speaker, Pollard has shared his many adventures to audiences around the world and is host of the popular Everest Mystery channel on YouTube.
