ʻAwapuhi Luheluhe

Commonly called “Shell Ginger” this ornamental originates in Southeast Asia.  It was a popular motif for the etched glass vases and plates from Arts Hawaiʻi.  I always loved bringing this flower into the house, arranging it tall and simple.

Uluau is a wind that occurs around Waiākea, Hilo, Hawaiʻi Island.  It is said that most of the Uluau winds originate on the leeward sides.  As for our Hilo district, we can look at it in a literal sense:  The Stirring Winds.

ʻIeʻie

Regarded as the royal of the forest, the ʻieʻie is found in dense, healthy forests. The flower appears at the tip of the woody vine, proudly standing high in the ʻōhiʻa trees.

Chants tell us of its hierarchy both in the forest and on the kuahu hula. Ceremonial chants at the dedication of the kuahu, dedicate the ʻieʻie to Laka, the deity of the forest.

The long aerial roots were fashioned into mahiʻole, fish and shrimp traps, and into the framework for ʻulīʻulī.

The lehua ʻāhihi has beautiful and distinct leaf patterns.  It is a hardy bush that grows on the pali or in the kuahiwi where wind, rain and mist are a major factor.  The flower buds are held in the highest respect where it is praised in song and dance.  This full bloomed beauty represents Pele and her sister Hiʻiaka and is cherished in our lei.  This special design is dedicated to our cousin Keolalani Hanoa of Punaluʻu, Kaʻū.

Limu

A character of life here on an island are the particular flavors and scents.  One of my favorites is the aroma of limu when we are near the shore.  Limu līpoa has a distinct flavor and because it washes up on the sand, drying out in the sun, the smell is more perceptible.   A favorite limu for many, the wāwaeʻiole is easy to distinguish from others. Its name gives us a hint: it looks like the foot of a rat!  This design celebrates the many limu that feed both iʻa and kānaka.
