In the watercolor paintings I made, I tried to add lots of detail in each one. Like in grapes, each grape has an individual shine. Or in the surfboard one, I added a little crab to make it a bit more cute.

My dream for a shared future is one where no child is defined by displacement, but by boundless possibility. Born far from their ancestral lands, their eyes carry no borders, only hope, curiosity, and the promise of tomorrow. Children rise beyond status, like any other child they do not see themselves as refugees. They flourish when given space to play, to imagine and to express their talents freely. Hope lives in their laughter, their dreams, their innocence. They remind us that tomorrow does not have to mirror today, it can be brighter, more just and full of possibility. A shared future is a place where no one is hidden, where every life is seen and valued. One day, or miracle will ride from hope and our shared humanity will shine.

I photographed, developed and printed this series of a dozen images circa 1982. These photographs were taken in the Minneapolis Mill District and its counterpart on the east side of the river between 3rd Street and the Stone Arch Bridge, all within 2 blocks of the river.

The images were captured pre–St Anthony Main re-development, pre- Riverplace, pre-creation of the East and West River Road parkways and walk / bike paths, pre-opening of the Stone Arch Bridge as a pedestrian link across the river, pre-Milwaukee Road Development. Pre-Guthrie, Mill City Museum and McPhail. Pre condos and coffee shops. Pracna existed on the east bank of the river, Fuji Ya on the west. Not much else.

These prints are the only ones that exist, the negatives are gone. Some of the buildings documented in this series still exist, some have been repurposed, some have been demolished. Some are easier to identify than others.

I am an architect with an enthusiasm for photography. I practiced architecture in Minneapolis and Los Angeles for 35 hears. Upon moving to Minneapolis in 1982, I became fascinated with the Minneapolis Mills District and the undeveloped riverfront. New to the area, I spent hours exploring, charmed by the composition, texture, and layers of history of the buildings and by the spaces between them. This series of photographs is the culmination of that exploration.

I hope you enjoy this bit of Minneapolis History!
