This one-hour training equips marriage and family therapists to recognize signs of cognitive decline in clients, understand the differential diagnostics, and navigate the clinical and ethical complexities that arise when working with individuals with dementia and their families. Given that MFTs are often the first point of contact for families noticing changes in a loved one, and can frequently be involved in ongoing care long after a diagnosis, this training addresses both the &quot;what to look for&quot; and the &quot;what to do&quot; when individuals, couples and families experience the relational systems shift and strain around a diagnosis. Learning ObjectivesBy the end of this training, participants will be able to:<ol fr-original-style="" style="width: 100%; box-sizing: inherit;"><li fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: inherit;">Differentiate major types of dementia (Alzheimer&#39;s disease, vascular dementia, Lewy body dementia, frontotemporal dementia, and mixed dementia), including their typical presentations and progression patterns.</li><li fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: inherit;">Identify early behavioral, cognitive, and relational warning signs that may indicate a dementia process, and distinguish these from normal aging or other conditions.</li><li fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: inherit;">Clarify scope of practice&nbsp;recognizing which professionals are qualified to diagnose dementia, and understand the MFT&#39;s role in identifying concerns, making referrals, and ruling out other explanations within their own scope.</li><li fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: inherit;">Describe approaches to support individuals living with dementia, and the impact on their relational systems.&nbsp;</li><li fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: inherit;">Assess the ethical and clinical implications of cognitive decline on informed consent, including how to evaluate capacity, when to involve surrogate decision-makers, and how to adapt clinical practice as a client&#39;s cognitive status changes over time.</li><li fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: inherit;">Recognize common relational and family system impacts of a dementia diagnosis including caregiver burden, role reversal, grief and ambiguous loss, and shifts in couple or family dynamics and identify therapeutic entry points for supporting the whole family system.</li></ol>Presenter BioMegan Allcock, M.A., LMFTMegan received her M.A. in Marriage and Family Therapy from Hope International University and is currently a doctoral candidate in Marriage and Family Therapy at Adler University. Her doctoral dissertation examines the family system impact of Alzheimer&#39;s disease on families who have lost more than one family member to the disease, reflecting her commitment to bridging clinical practice, supervision, and research to serve families navigating the loss and change associated with dementia. She has been a member of the Alzheimer&#39;s Association&#39;s Junior Board for four years and frequently volunteers at nearby memory care facilities in the community. She founded The Listening Lounge and Wellness Center, a private Couple and Family Therapy practice in Chicago where she treats individuals, couples and families using a trauma-informed, emotionally focused systemic approach to promote healthier relationships. Megan is also currently working toward her AAMFT Approved Supervisor designation.
