Join Boulder Symphony for an unforgettable evening of heroism in the face of adversity and universal brotherhood. As we conclude our 2025-2026 season, there&rsquo;s no better way to do so than through the music of the great Ludwig van Beethoven. Beethoven&rsquo;s Overture to Egmont is adapted from the great poet Goethe&rsquo;s play, which tells the tale of Count Egmont&rsquo;s struggle to bring about Dutch liberation under the imperial rule of Spain. Although he is eventually executed, Egmont&rsquo;s rousing speech gains a life of its own as a triumph of the human spirit over oppression, and he is celebrated as a martyr. Beethoven&rsquo;s work combines a slow introduction with soaring melodies, eventually concluding in a bombastic &ldquo;Symphony of Victory&rdquo;, echoing the Count&rsquo;s fiery rhetoric. Local composer Holly McMahon&rsquo;s work, &ldquo;Bigfoot Steps on Boulder&rdquo;, is the perfect companion piece. Depicting the mythical creature emerging from the woods to disrupt an otherwise serene scene of butterflies and birds, McMahon imagines Bigfoot as a stand-in for the adversities in life.
